For what ever reason, the stories aren't in the order that they were recorded in, so it is a little confusing when they hint at the next episode that either already happened, or is so far down the line you'd forget. Other than that it's a good listen, The advertisement can be a little annoying at first, but there is a certain charm to the way that they did these advertisements back in the day that you just don't see anymore.
The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are played brilliantly by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. If you don't like old radio and Sherlock Holmes, this may not appeal to you.It is a walk back to another era with some frankly loveable actors who never fail to entertain.
Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone as actors and the introduction given each week by Dr Watson and Harry Bartel.
No, it is designed to listen to an episode at a time.
Come on Watson, the game's afoot...............
Harry Nile.. Both great detectives and both wonderfully executed
Yes and he always does and amazing job... He is absolutely my favorite Sherlock
No one I can think of.
The utter disappointment of the quality of the recordings.
This does not apply to my issue with the stories.
The recordings were scratchy, the commercials ( a VERY important part of the experience) were cut short in what I assume was an effort to save space and time. I have some of these stories on tape and the quality is outstanding. I would absolutely NOT recommend this set to anyone as an audio book.
If the commercials were heard once, it might be fine. But why they must interrupt every performance to advertise deceased products is beyond me. Personally, I stopped listening to the stories, which I rather enjoyed. (I think the actors are excellent.)
No, I would not recommend this because of all the old commercials interrupting each and every program.
He's a brilliant actor with an incredible voice!
If the commercials were cut out, they'd be good listening.
birds and more birds
yes, basil Rathbone is the best
I am one of the oddballs that loves the old commercials but this book had the same commercial every time, alas that is how it was back then one sponsor for the same show every week
If you like Petri wine...
Storylines are semi predictable.
The saving grace of this audio book.
The Petri wine guy.
Edit out all of the commercials.
I am Over the road truck driver and listen to books as much as I can.
I reckon people who like listening to commercials would like this
the stories were good, but the commercials took more time than stories
edit out some of the ads
was upset that couldn't listen to the stories because of all the ads
there is a ad at the beginning then approx 5 minutes later then again at the end of story
Say something about yourself!
My quest for Nostalgia couldn't help save this. The 60 second long adds for West coast Wine from the middle of last century were appalling. The genius of Conan Doyle's stories was unable to help the awful presentation. Lucky it only went to air once a week - any more often would have had the audience deserting radio for marathon running.
"Could have been better"
I was disappointed in this as the production values are quite poor. The episodes are in no order what so ever so the actors chop and change , the references to the next episode at the end of each make no sense and the sound isn't brilliant- I know they are old recordings but some episodes are unlistenable to through headphones. Some of the same episodes are available on Murder By Moonlight where the quality is better so I'd suggest you download that instead.
It's a shame as the stories and actors are great just let down by the reproduction efforts at PDQ.
Fantastic Very Good
The inter action between Holmes and Watson in these stories
He is fantastic in these storys I love him as Sherlock
"Basil Basil Basil"
Basil rathbone who was my favourite Sherlock holmes
Lots of the stories remained you of other adventures
His Sherlock holmes voice
Made me so happy
The adverts and organ music get a bit annoying, shame you can't fast forward without losing any of the story.
