Publisher's summary

Evil exists. Evil walks the streets. And evil has spawned a diabolical new disciple in this white-knuckle thriller from New York Times best-selling author Tess Gerritsen.

PECCAVI. The Latin word is scrawled in blood at the scene of a young woman's brutal murder: I HAVE SINNED. It's a chilling Christmas greeting for Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli, who swiftly link the victim to controversial celebrity psychiatrist Joyce O'Donnell, Jane's professional nemesis and a member of a sinister cabal called the Mephisto Club.

On top of Beacon Hill, the club's acolytes devote themselves to the analysis of evil: Can it be explained by science? Does it have a physical presence? Do demons walk the earth? Drawing on a wealth of dark historical data and mysterious religious symbolism, the Mephisto scholars aim to prove a startling theory: that Satan himself exists among us.

With the grisly appearance of a corpse on their doorstep, it's clear that someone, or something, is indeed prowling the city. The members of the club begin to fear the very subject of their study. Could this maniacal killer be one of their own, or have they inadvertently summoned an evil entity from the darkness?

Delving deep into the most baffling and unusual case of their careers, Maura and Jane embark on a terrifying journey to the very heart of evil, where they encounter a malevolent foe more dangerous than any they have ever faced...one whose work is only just beginning.

Great mystery!

I was definitely enveloped by this story, loved the way it was written. You get to experience the perspectives of the various characters. You'll get to know them so well that their actions will seem so natural to you, not fake and fiction. The suspense will keep you listening! I must admit that I did double check my door/window locks every night while I was listening to this book!

a little on the weird side

Would you try another book from Tess Gerritsen and/or Kathe Mazur?

This book is based alot on religion. It wasn't her best story but since i love the series I got through it.

BRAVO

I love Tess Garritsen's books. She never disappoints. I usually find myself amazed and impressed while listening to her stories. The Mephisto Club was no exception. Although it may seem like it's a little off the beaten path for this author-it grabs you hard from the beginning and holds you tight throughout. Watch out Dean & Stephen you have company in your playground. Although I like the stories with Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles the best, I will purchase any book by Tess Gerritsen knowing that I will be highly entertained.

Gerritsen's Best Yet!

This book hooked me from the first sentence and kept me there until the end. Fast paced, suspenceful, and I didn't want it to end. I'm sure there must be a sequel in the near future because this story must go on!

The deepest metaphysical/historical of the series

Would you consider the audio edition of The Mephisto Club to be better than the print version?

Audible is fast becoming my favorite way to "read", its a much more engaging process, especially when the reader is very good, as is this one. She gets the different personalities well with voice inflections and regional varieties.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I lvoed the historical Spiritual knowledge transmitted along with a riveting plot.

predictable

Predictable, quick read. An enjoyable read that kept me on the recumbent bike longer, but that lacked the extra depth to make it really interesting. My first by this author, and I would try another.

Pretty good book

This was a nice little thriller with good characters. The plot was typical with the sadistic, deviant bad guy whose acts are bit too heinous to be believable. You won't be convinced this could actually happen, but it's an entertaining read.

Inconsitant plot...

There were several things mentioned in this book that are inconsistent from previous book,Vanish.
-the first time for a physical relationship between Maura and Daniel
-Angela and Frank Sr separation due to her finding out about his mistress. Angela meeting Korsak. End of Vanish, she moved in with him.
-Almathea referenced as Maura not having seen for period of time. She died in Vanish.

why did I wait?!?!?

This book has been around for a while. Heck, it's been sitting in my cart for YEARS... It's fantastic! The Rizzoli and Isles part aside (because the Rizzoli family reminds me of my own! 😆) The story was fascinating and thought provoking. The mystery remains a mystery throughout, at least for me it did and I sometimes solve them at the half- way point.
Anyway, I really, REALLY enjoyed it and was truly sorry when it ended.

Not as good as other Rizzoli & Isles books

Any additional comments?

This was a fairly good listen but not quite as good as previous Rizzoli & Isles books that I've listened to. If you like the series, you have to listen to it to keep up with what is going on in the lives of the characters. But honestly, this one was a little out there with the whole religious/supernatural back story. I don't want to give away anything in the story, but that part of the story becomes the main story line and was just too far fetched to really be interesting for me personally. All in all, it was entertaining and I will continue on to the next R & I book.
