Publisher's summary

Lacey Sherlock's life is forever changed when her older sister's body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse. She is the fourth victim of the String Killer, the name given by the media to a murderer who leads his victims into a maze with a ball of twine.

Seven years after Belinda's death, Lacey, now an FBI agent, is paired up with computer whiz Dillon Savich, who has developed a predictive program to aid in the apprehension of serial killers.

When the String Killer strikes again, Lacey spots his handiwork, resulting in his capture. The suspect confesses, but maintains that he did not kill Belinda. No sooner does Lacey confirm his innocence of that crime than an attempt is made on her life.

Suspecting her attacker is the same person who murdered her sister, Lacey and Dillon know they must solve the mystery - before they become the killer's next victims.

Listen to another FBI Thriller.

Critic reviews

"Full of karate, pistol-whipping, and other malevolent mayhem, Catherine Coulter's The Maze could be described as a junior-varsity version of Silence of the Lambs."
"Susan Eriksen's reading is spirited and emotive with effective character vocalizations." ( Library Journal)

Too much detail, not enough flow

I am in the middle of this 'read' and keep skipping ahead, frankly I find it embarrassing it is so bad. It is poorly written, with too much detail of insignificant things. Plus I find it hard to believe that FBI characters (or anyone) would act this way.

The writer also jumps into new sections of the book, so it takes a minute to clue into what is happening. No flow and lack of interest.

I really can't wait for this book to be over.

Fast Paced "run-of-the-mill" Cop Story

In short. A totally average book I'd give a C as a teacher.
It isn't a BAD book, it's just NOT a very good book. The editor was very judicious that, a few times I thought I'd gotten the abridged version as the scene changed so quickly I thought I'd missed something. But at two files and 12 hours I'm certain I got the whole book.
There's no new angle here, no quirky detective with a standard set of possible other killers to keep you wondering. But for a book titled The Maze I'd expect far more twists and turns (plot wise or even in and yes, pun intended with regard to this killer's M.O.)
It has a run-of-the-mill romance.
Don't let the S.F. picture for a setting fool you, most the story could take place anywhere.
S.F. and ALL its charms, ("The Paris of America") having lived just south for the very romantic S.F. for 1/3 of my life. (At least she doesn't call it "Frisco", a real no-no for the locals). But, there's nary a single feature of S.F. mentioned (The notorious Alcatraz prison island does get a line.). At the price I bought it, (marked way down to $4.95) it was a bargain.
This book is NOT worth an entire credit or significant bucks, not with SO MANY quality thrillers out there The Maze is simple escapist reading, I'd name some "PRO" authors but that's against the rules I think.
One slight GOOD and unique note on the audio production. The sound engineer made phone calls SOUND "phone callish" with a slightly "tinny" quality. It added some realism and clarified easily who was the distant one and while the local voice was normal.
Bottom Line: If you want QUALITY buy the big names (male or female writers) which, in comparison this writing pales.

Not worth it

Very long, rambling and somewhat preposterous mystery. The reader frequently talks too rapidly as well. Not worth the time.

poor reading

Again I have been disappointed by the reader in this book. I hope better narrators are selected for Catherine Coulter's future audio books.

zzz zzz

If not for Susan Ericksen, this would go on my "worst" list. It was boring, the characters were ridiculous and predictable. When will women stop writing books about weak women needing a big, strong man to save them???. zzzzzzzz.....

Disappointed

I am a fan of later books by this author, but not this one. Characters are overly predictable and over the top.

The reading is sometimes monotone; other times not. It's hard to distinguish which of the two lead characters, Sherlock (female) or Savich (male), are speaking much of the time. I'm halfway through and can't listen any more.

Worst book I have tried to listen to in awhile

The book and the narration was so bad I couldn't finish this book....I gave it several hours hoping it would get better and it didn't....a book has to be really unbearable for me not to finish so that tells you how bad this was

Simply dreadful. Audiobook

Cheesy, cringe-inducing, gawd-awful. Totally predictable. Terrible dialogue. About what you would expect if a 14 year old, with limited understanding of the businessl/legal/social/financial/etc world that adults live in, tried to write a book. Also, the performance was poor. Poor timing, almost no emotional range, sometimes difficult to tell who was supposed to be talking, often couldn’t tell that a chapter had ended/started (except for a nonsensical change of topic). Bad (attempts to do) accents. Drawwwling in an overwrought attempt at a “southern” accent and (I’m not kidding) holding her nose closed with her fingers when attempting an east coast accent. IDK about the nose-pinching for sure of course but that’s the quite vivid impression I got. Oh, oh, there’s more..... The main character wrote really bad and sappy song lyrics with juvenile attempts at sexual innuendo, which the narator read in a monotone, including 5-6 repetitions of the chorus. Simply dreadful. Waste of time and money.

Could not finish

I love the narrator (Susan Ericksen) so I decided to try this book because she’s reading it. Mistake. The story seemed compelling at first, but I could not stand the way the author stigmatized the bad guys. I was especially bothered by the author’s use of the phrase “illegal alien” and the main character’s wish that one guy, too insane to stand trial, get murdered in prison. Dehumanizing the bad guys was incidental to the plot, but it proved too distracting for me to concentrate on the story. I could not finish.
