Kirsten's wasn't the only wedding planned for that July day. At Morbay register office, a terrified young girl makes her wedding vows. Days later, her bridegroom is found dead in a seedy seaside hotel.
Meanwhile, the discovery of a skeleton unearths connections with an Elizabethan playwright and a rarely performed play that may be a confession to an age-old murder or may cast light on recent mysteries.

"A beguiling author who interweaves past and present." (The Times)
Good crime book with enough twists and turns to keep you listening til the end. This was a leap in the dark for me as I have not come accross this author before, I have since read more of her writing. The narration is good and allows good flow of the prose.
Would recommend this book. Liked the story despite feeling that I knew the outcome. It was easy to listen to and enjoyed the narration.
When the mother assumes that the father may have been different.
Joyce and Chief Inspector's first encounter.
Normally prefer something with a faster pace but having said that I did enjoy this read.
"Good, but ..."
I have listened to a couple of other books in this series and each has left me with the same sense of irritation. The basic police procedural is fine and I am interested in the characters but I do wish the author would not try so hard to link the stories with supposed events from the past. In the end it ruins the believability of the book, in my opinion, and the extracts from "old texts", in this case a newly-discovered play, are really poor. You cannot create an Elizabethan dramatic work just by adding a few "thees" and "thous" to material where the thought processes are really modern. At least as far as I am concerned the whole revenge tragedy link was forced and inauthentic to the extreme.
Having said that, the narration is good and the book is certainly not the worst I have heard.
