The List | [J. A. Konrath]

The List

The List is a technothriller about a group of people who each have tattoos of numbers on the bottoms their feet, and don't know why. One of them, a Chicago Homicide cop named Tom Mankowski, has had one of these strange tattoos since birth. When he investigates a violent murder and discovers the victim also has a tattooed number, it sets the ball rolling for an adventure of historic proportions. To say more would give away too much.

    "Great Listen!"

I really enjoyed this story. For me it was one of those that I couldn't stop listening to. It is a fast paced, interesting thriller, with great characters and even some good humour. The narrator is excellent.

    "Quite a Tasty Mix!"
Where does The List rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's at the top of my list of unexpectedly good books. Describing the plot will not make you want to read it. Ignore any plot summaries. You just have to dive in. The book does make you suspend an awful lot of realism but it works. It's a genre mix that grabs you immediately with a little science, a lot of action, a bit of horror, some humor and a whopping "what if?"

What was one of the most memorable moments of The List?

The relationship between Roy and Bert. Funny!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Who said history is dead?

    "Love it"

I really like Konrath, particularly the Jack Daniels series. But, I got to say this one is absolutely delightful. Kept me listening to the end. I couldn't wait until the end to see how it turned out. But then I really didn't want it to stop. I hope I'm right, but I think this one is due a sequel

    "Captivating"
If you could sum up The List in three words, what would they be?

I really enjoyed this book although not my usual taste. The concept is chilling and they pull you into the story from the very beginning.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely. Although a little farfetched it feeds into some of the experiments reported to have taken place in WWII.

Have you listened to any of Benjamin L. Darcie???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No - this is my first. He does a good job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not extreme, but definitely emotionally involved.

    "A Nice Listen"
Would you listen to The List again? Why?

I believe I will listen to this selection again. The story is interesting and the narration made it believable.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I thought the ending would be more predictable, but was pleasantly spooked.

    Any additional comments?

At times the story was predictable, but interestesting enough to keep me listening. As with Konrath's other book ("Origins"), I felt the book had been edited down and the author had more to give to this story. Overall, an good listen.

    "Just OK"
Would you try another book from J. A. Konrath and/or Benjamin L. Darcie?

Probably won't buy another Konrath...too many other good authors out there.

Would you recommend The List to your friends? Why or why not?

    No.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Performance was Ok. Character voices ok; but have definitely heard better.

Do you think The List needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Nah. Didn't really find it that interesting or entertaining.

    Any additional comments?

The action was often too unbelievable. The good guys slipped maybe 30-50 attempts at their lives... I lost count. The killers were made out to be such deadly people but when it actually came to doing job they were morons. In the end it seemed a bit outlandish and trivial. At times the characters were likable; but other times the humor was forced and silly. The whole assassination attempt seemed pretty far-fetched and kind of tacked on. I would have like to seen more done with the idea of the cloned famous people; maybe groomed them as they were being raised and turned them into some kind of amazing team or something...don't know...not a writer but the idea was fascinating and he didn't really do that much with it. The idea was there through the whole book but not put to really good use.

"Well written story that will keep you intrigued"
What made the experience of listening to The List the most enjoyable?

The story moves along quickly after the main character finds he has something strangely in common with the victim of a murder he is investigating. The story gets more complex and mysterious as more bodies show up with this same point of commonality before it finally starts to unravel through the persistence of the investigator, barely in time to heighten his senses for a savage fight for survival.

What other book might you compare The List to and why?

Those that enjoyed a good multilevel and well developed mystery like '14' will likely enjoy this book as well.

What does Benjamin L. Darcie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Darcie's narration adds to the grit and depth of the main character.

    Story
"Definitely J.A. Konrath - Just missing Jack et.al."
What did you love best about The List?

"The List" held the excellent, subtle humor, and puns we have all learned to love. J.A. Konrath is a natural when it comes to comic relief...even in the most depraved of human conditions. The plot was imaginative and unique. He provided characters who were fun, annoying, and likeable - all at the same time.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Well, after the long climatic portion - the resolution seemed to be a bit rushed. However, I think it may have been necessary to the discovery revealed. That revelation, at the very end of the novel (partly before, if you were paying attention), was excellent. Konrath, actually leaves the reader wanting more by revealing less. I think some authors may have extended the ending to discuss more about the "discovery." This would have left a cliffhanger of some sort ; however, the absolute "NEED TO KNOW," is so much greater through Konrath's method. * I hope that was detailed enough; yet, vague enough, as to not spoil anything.

What does Benjamin L. Darcie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

What a great Narrator! His voice was great for all the parts. He is very talented and refreshing. There is always the "Dick Hill battle," going on. I have nothing against Dick Hill's narrations, except two things: 1. I feel he has been type cast into the character of Jack Reacher. 2. At times, he gives the impression that he is an improv actor, and is purposely acting foolish in his own narration of a character. As if he is making a joke out what the character is saying, and integrating it into his narration.

So, with all that said...Props to Benjamin L. Darcie. The only thing I noticed, was that Abe seemed to sound African American at times. As if the voices of Roy and Abe, were too similar.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"The List" - A group of people all connected by a mysterious tattooed number. The connection: All part of a lineage of great leaders, inventors, and killers.

    Any additional comments?

    "ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS!?" =)

J.A. Konrath and Benjamin L. Darcie are brilliant with their reincarnation of "Jack the Ripper." I was not aware of the speech pathology, he was afflicted with. For such a "bad guy," his character was one of my favorites. Great job!

Where does The List rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The narrator was first rate and made immersion reading on the Fire HD a great entertainment experience.
The thriller was well-written with an abundance of comedic elements.

"Not as enjoyable as most of Konrath's"

I would give this story an "ok" but it really wasn't up to Jack Daniels standards. The whole plot was really far fetched and just not that interesting to me. Abe saved the story though through comic relief. He and Roy made the book worth listening to.
