"Combe Island I wish I was there"

What an enjoyable read!! I've listened to some of P D James's abridged ( Drama ) books in the past and thought they were good but there always seemed to be something missing - that wonderful ingredient called 'atmosphere'. ( Probably due to the editorial restrictions placed on the script writer. )

This unabridged version certainly has it.

It's not a strong plot but it doesn't need to be because it's simplicity balances well with the way she builds up the main characters so you get a good understanding of their motivations and frailties.

Also the description of the Island on which the plot unfolds I thought was so descriptive that it allowed me to imagine I was actually walking around the Island with the cast.

It's not a fast plot but the way it builds up in a leisurely way compliments the atmosphere of the Island.

If you would like a well constructed story giving your imagination chance to visualise and without the unnecessary gore prevelant in a lot of novels nowadays read this - I'm sure you will enjoy the experience.

    "The Lighthouse"

I personally have always found P D Jame's books rather hard going, so took a chance on downloading this audible and was not disappointed. Very descriptive and each scene was well set and written so you could imagine the scenes. A very good who dunnit.

    "my first audible"

maybe I was unused to the audible format, but I found myself falling asleep while listening to this story. And unlike a book that slips from your lap onto the floor, this will keep on playing and you will have to rewind and hope to try to find your place.
Since this download, I have listened to others, some read by Stephen Fry for example and have never fallen asleep. Maybe it's the narrator.

"I like this sort of thing"

The good thing about PD James is that you know pretty much exactly what you're going to get, and if you like this sort of thing, then you know you're going to like it. I like it as an undemanding listen, but as usual, the ending was a little far-fetched. Well-read.
