Publisher's summary

Turning 27 may be terrifying for some, but for Alex, a struggling artist living in the Midwest, it is cataclysmic. Something about this birthday, his name, and the beautiful woman whose life he has just saved has suddenly made him - and everyone he loves - a target. A target for extreme and uncompromising violence...

This Goodkind fan was delightfully surprised

I hope we'll hear more from Alex! It's hard to write this review and not be a spoiler. I'll just say that Goodkind fans will feel right at home and find a lot in this one. Folks that haven't read any Goodkind should enjoy this modern story with a fantasy twist.
It just seemed too short for a Terry Goodkind.

A fresh breath from a stale author.

Having heard quite a bit of negativity about this book I was never really interested. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes there are lots of references to the Sword of Truth series. But having read all that as well, its not necessary to enjoy this book. After the authors last book Warheart I was disappointed beyond belief. But this book shows what made Wizards First rule so great and that is a detailed compelling story/world. My only real complaint is that some times Jax feels hollow and lacking depth. . .

Modern-day Wizards first rule

way too much like wizards first rule. I love the idea of a story about the world Richard created in Confessor, but there were too many similarities. I still listened to the end though.

Where the precipice of Technology meets Magic

I thoroughly enjoyed the nuances that reminded me, or should I say hints towards different types of characters as well as names of locations that correlate so much of The Sword of truth series world...but also an interesting thriller. If you are a fan of the SOT series and remember it fondly, you will enjoy. I look forward to see if Alex and Jax come back for another story or two.

Not bad.

There were a few times where it felt like it was dragging but, all in all, it was a good story. I love fantasy, so if magic is involved I'm usually satisfied. Definitely not your average fantasy novel though. Worth a listen.

Great addition to the SoT world

Great addition to the sword of truth series. I love how parts of this story relate to Richard and Kahlan’s story. This book is a must read (listen) for any sword of truth fan.

Loved it!

A nice adventure set in the "other world" Richard created during The Sword of Truth series. If you combine Nicci and Kahlen into one person you get Jax! If only Richard could have done that for himself! Very nice adventure. I wish Mr. Goodkind had written another with Alexander and Jax. Oh well. Rest in Peace!

3 1/2 stars

First, you really should read the Sword of Truth series before reading this book (all of it), its almost a sequel (as much as Debt of Bones is a prequel).

Second, I was somewhat disappointed with this book, it just Isn't at the same level of quality as his other books (even Naked Empire had smoother writing at least). I think the problem here is that he's trying to write a much shorter book than what he's use to, and it shows. For those of you that didn't like all the philosophy in the SoT books, good news, its only alluded to and there are no speeches :) (Though, again, the bad guys are motivated by their hatred of all things good, etc... I'm an Objectivist and even I get tired of it...)

Not a bad book, but not up to par with other similar books - perhaps a bit better than Dean Koontz has been recently.
