Publisher's summary

With time running out to stop the nuclear destruction of Tel Aviv, Dewey Andreas must defeat his most fearsome opponent yet.

Off a quiet street in Brooklyn, New York, Israeli Special Forces commander Kohl Meir is captured by operatives of the Iranian secret service, who smuggle Meir back to Iran, where he is imprisoned, tortured, and prepared for a show trial. What they don’t know is that Meir was in New York to recruit Dewey Andreas for a secret operation.

Meir had been tipped off that Iran had finally succeeded in building their first nuclear weapon, one they were planning to use to attack Israel. His source was a high-level Iranian government official and his proof was a photo of the bomb itself. Dewey Andreas, a former Army Ranger and Delta, owes his life to Meir and his team of Israeli commandos. Now, to repay his debt, Dewey has to attempt the impossible - to both rescue Meir from one of the world’s most secure prisons and to find and eliminate Iran’s nuclear bomb before it’s deployed - all without the help or sanction of Israel or America (at the near certain risk of detection by Iran).

Unfortunately, Dewey’s first moves have caught the attention of Abu Paria, the brutal and brilliant head of VEVAK, the Iranian secret service. Now Dewey has to face off against, outwit, and outfight an opponent with equal cunning, skill, and determination, with the fate of millions hanging in the balance.

Solid but not spectacular

Again, like the first two books, great prose, great descriptions, solid character building. Less good guys died this time around. But I found the final execution of the heist a little far-fetched. Harder to suspend disbelief.

Next!!!!

I don't know how anyone can NOT like these stories: Coes doesn't know about Israel, Coes doesn't know about Iran, Coes doesn't now about Iran's trials, etc. This is a story out of the authors imagination, NOT the actual news. For Pete's sake! This is not a lot of these readers' kind of book, that's for sure.

I love this series and I love Dewey Andreas. He gets out of so much trouble that he is like a superhero. That's what I love about him. It's just too bad Abu Paria wasn't killed.

This was about Dewey stealing Iran's first nuclear bomb that they are about to drop on Tel Aviv, and of the torture Kohl Mier, who was kidnapped off the streets of New York and taken to Iran, suffered until Dewey saved him.

A little description of sex, but not much, and the F-bomb was used 85 times.

As for the narration: Peter Hermann has all kinds of 5 star reviews but for me he loses a star because all of his female characters sounding just like men.

Not as fast paced as the last, but a solid gallop

What made the experience of listening to The Last Refuge the most enjoyable?

The premise of a Dewey being around to make the difference makes for a fun read.

What about Peter Hermann’s performance did you like?

Peter expressed emotion (especially anger) with more force than the usual readers

Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect!

I quickly became a Ben Coes fan after the first Dewey Andreas book and sadly just completed the third and last (hopefully only for the time being!) This book spoils me for others with all of the action, character development and rich depiction of the world with all of its beauty, danger and flaws. Loved it!

Excellent Fast Moving

Another excellent novel of action an intrigue featuring Dewey Andreas....
If only Audible could distance themselves from politics and not include interviews with Mitt Romney as some sort of literary critic.... completely ruins an otherwise excellent recording....
And yes, as soon as I heard his voice I stopped listening, thank god the recording didn’t start with such trash, otherwise I’d have missed the excellent book despite myself.

Never leave a man behind

Dewey goes on a mission to save his brother in arms Cole. As always, the series is full of action and great background on the global intelligence framework.

The more Coes I listen to the more I want

I think everyone addicted to audiobooks agrees that the narration can make or break a book. At least that's my call. Peter Hermann is amazing. He's German, Russian, American, Iranian, you name it. I am no linguist but I get the picture regardless of language. Coe provides the story, Hermann brings it to life.

Can't wait for the next Coe. There has to be a #5, right?

I’m concerned with the editing process.

The series is great , extremely detailed with good themes and savage characters.
But a few sentences every now and then it becomes painfully obvious that there’s a flaw in the editing. For example in chapter 27 it says Dewey is driving a Ford Tahoe????
That’s a pretty elementary mistake. I still very much enjoy and recommend the series.
