Publisher's Summary

We enter The Last Precinct through the reverberating aftershocks of Black Notice, inconceivably finding Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner, Kay Scarpetta, an object of suspicion and criminal investigation. The nightmare on Scarpetta's doorstep continues as she discovers that the so-called Werewolf murders may have extended to New York City and into the darkest corners of her past. When a formidable prosecutor, a female assistant district attorney, is brought into the case, Scarpetta must struggle to make what she knows to be the truth prevail against mounting and unnerving evidence to the contrary. Tested in every way, she turns inward to ask: Where do you go when there is nowhere left? The answer is the Last Precinct.

The Last Precinct is the 11th book in the Kay Scarpetta series.

    "Another great Scarpetta novel"

A really good read. Enough twists and turns to keep both the new readers and faithful Patricia Cornwell fans guessing.

    "Too much talk"

There may be a book in there somewhere, but I don't have time to listen to hours of analysis. Maybe I should have gotten the unabridged version. A disappointing purchase.

    "The Last Precinct (Unabridged)"

This was better the second time. I had read the book and missed some items. I like this series. This author never disappoints me.

    "Always a good Read/Listen"

I enjoy all of the Scarpetta books. This is not the best one, but does build more on the personal lives of all the characters and is definitly a good book. If you enjoy the series, you will not be disappointed.

"the author seems to be getting tired"

I enjoyed her previous books. But this one did not seem to have anything really new or different. An OK book if not compared to her previous works.

    "A Little Different"

Not exactly your normal Scarpetta--she's trying to save her career and her livelihood. Assisted by her niece and her trusty sidekick cop, several new characters emerge and Scarpetta's character expands more fully as the plot gets thicker. Nice job Patricia Cornwell.

"The Last Precinct - The Last Cornwell"

This was unbearable to get through and will probably be my last Cornwell book or at least my last Scarpetta book. I book read the one after this and half way through it I think I threw it at my wall I was so disgusted with the turn it took so I may try some of her other characters, but I've moved on to other authors for now.

    "ANOTHER SCARPETTA BOOK WELL WRITTEN"

As I have said in other reviews, I like the Scarpetta series and recommend this book, only if you have read the previous books. It's not a total necessity, but the book will be understood so much better, knowing the history of her beginnings/past.

"Epic finish to the first saga!"
Where does The Last Precinct rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Overall this was probably the best book in the series so far, if not just as good as "Point of Origin". *Spoiler*Really my only complaint is that they didn't really explain why "Jay" didn't kill her, other than the fact that Lucy escaped with the shotgun in hand and was looking for Kay. But he could've killed Kay and looked for Lucy or fled. Other than that, it was fantastic! Cornwell really shined in this one, her narrative is getting better with every book. And really diving into Kay's psyche during the sessions with Anna and the suffocating cloud of existence she was in after that, took her character to a whole other level. Cornwell tied everything up perfectly, all of the unanswered questions from this whole saga. Except, of course, "Jay" and Kiffen's whereabouts, and what happened to "John the Baptist". But it's pretty obvious he's going to prison or will possibly get the death penalty.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Last Precinct?

The most memorable moment was definitely the Grand Jury hearing. Jaime Berger was fantastic, and Kay and her were perfect. I knew Berger would use her position against Ryder, and it was great that he had to sit there and squirm the whole time! Cornwell should start a series starring Jaime Berger, I would definitely read it. It would be amazing to have these same kind of stories, but from the perspective of an investigative, District's Attorney.

What does Kate Reading bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kate Reading is Kay Scarpetta! She is buy far my favorite reader, and portrays Scarpetta amazingly. My first Scarpetta book was the audio version of Black Notice, read by Kate Reading. I have since went back and listened to all of the books from the beginning. I listened to all of the ones read by CJ Critt. She was very good as well, but still never compared to Kate Reading. And Reading's side characters are fantastic and mostly better than Critt's. I will say, I preferred Critt's Lucy and Benton, but Reading's Marino is the best!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were so many moving moments in this one it's hard to pick one. Marino's breakdown, then fall to a borderline alcoholic was very moving. Anna's letter was crazy. And the hearing was intense.

    Any additional comments?

I like that she ended this part of Kay's life, she needs a new start. I'm excited to see where she takes her next, and what new characters she introduces. And I hope she finds a way to keep Marino in the mix!
