The Last Man: A Novel | [Vince Flynn]

The Last Man: A Novel

The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

At first glance it looks as if Rickman has been kidnapped, but Rapp knows certain things about his old friend that cause him to wonder if something more disturbing isn’t afoot. Irene Kennedy, the director of the CIA, has ordered Rapp to find Rickman at all costs. Rapp must navigate the ever-shifting landscape of Afghanistan as the Taliban, Iranians, Pakistanis and Russians all plot to claim their piece of the war torn state.

With Afghanistan crumbling around him, Rapp must be as ruthless as his enemies and as deceitful as people in his own government if he has any hopes of completing his mission.

"The Last Man, the last novel"

I just finished the Last Man, I was saving it for a special occasion, it is a wonderful book and Vince Flynn was a great writer. I am sorry I won't be finding out more about Mitch Rapp and his friends. Vince Flynn was a good writer from the beginning, I have read them all and not one of them raise the BS flag for me. His stories are plausible and great to read. Sorry you have left us so soon Vince Flynn, I have been scrambling to find someone to replace you but I cannot find anyone who is as good a writer and knew his subject as well.

Mitch Rapp is a mean S.O.B with a good heart. I think I met him once. He is loyal, brave and sometimes down right crazy, but who could do this job better?

"Last Man is the last book I would recommend"
What disappointed you about The Last Man?

The plot was thinly veiled- even I had it figured out early on in Part One. Good writing of details, but none of the fine descriptions ended up having any importance.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story should have a more complex character. Also very many characters are introduced and only a few have any direct relevance to the story.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I haven't and I'm not likely to do so.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Good writing of details, but none of the fine descriptions ended up having any importance.

    Any additional comments?

I bought this because it was a listener favorite. I'm wondering why.

    "Rapp rocks"

Flynn has returned to present day for his latest installment in the Mitch Rapp series. Rapp heads up a team sent to investigate the kidnapping of a CIA operative in Afghanistan. Against the backdrop of an uncooperative department of state official, an FBI investigator looking into alleged corruption, and a CIA hating senator as well as an assassin turned reluctant ally, Rapp must solve an intricate web of clues and disinformation by a master plotter.

The pacing is excellent with an almost non-stop quality in the action. The plot twists come hard and fast. Flynn also introduces a couple of surprises that may serve to reset future Rapp tales (a welcome addition) as well as set the stage for other long serving characters to bow out gracefully, while adding some new ones with critical background info that make them more than one dimensional. Each installment has always displayed a fresh quality to the characters and plot and this one is no different.

As usual George Guidall gives a magnificent performance. His voice is perfect Rapp and his overall delivery sets the tone for the plot and conveys the pace of the action.

    "The Old Mitch Is Back!"

Great! The Old Mitch is back. And with him some of the great characters we have come to know and love. I was delighted to see this one slide right in behind " In Pursuit of Honor". So, for new fans this will be a great two-pack for you. It was fascinating to see these vunerable spots of Mitch here and there and then snap back into the tough man we know him to be. Another glowing preformance for Geo. Guidall. When I think of Mitch Rapp I hear Mr Guidall in my head. To Mr Flynn: It's good to know you are feeling better. I wish you continued improvement.

What would have made The Last Man better?

Not sure the story seemed to be rushed!

What do you think your next listen will be?

A Larry Correia book called Hard Magic

What three words best describe George Guidall’s voice?

Hes voice is always good. But does not mather when the story is so thin, nothing for him to work with

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Total disappointment. Liked all the the books that has come before but now it feels like its going downhill...

    Any additional comments?

Hope Vince get his sh*t together for the next book...

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Man to be better than the print version?

yes- I do not think i would have enjoyed this book nearly as much if I had read it. This was, at least for me, a very fun listen

What did you like best about this story?

    Flynn delivers.

    Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed listening to this book. Made the time pass and could not wait to hear the rest.
If you have read or listened to other Flynn books this is more of the same, and I mean that as a compliment.

    "Best of the best"
If you could sum up The Last Man in three words, what would they be?

    Best ofthe best

What other book might you compare The Last Man to and why?

Boy, hard to compare. This is an outstanding Mitch Rapp book. Vince Flynn is most definitely not coasting. He must have incredible sources in intelligence and special operations and have spent a lot of time in Afghanistan/Pakistan. The texture and granularity are outstanding without in any way detracting from the story. Flynn is inside the heads of the opposition. You are THERE.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is a fine performance. I have listened to other Mitch Rapp stories. Guidall does a great job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This is an action story, so I would not use the word "moved." Engaged? You bet. Nobody does action like Vince Flynn.

    Any additional comments?

    Saddle up.

I am a person that tries and get through 1 book a week if possible. I am Dyslexic so this is really the only way I can get through a book. I have listened to more book in a year than I read my first 20 years of my life. I found the joy of audio books in the early 2000 and have been a audible customer since 2000 or 2001. I have over 490 books in 2 different accounts and listened to 90%.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Man to be better than the print version?

I love George one of the best vocal performers on books I have listened too.

What did you like best about this story?

Mitch is my favorite character on these types of books. The only one that is close to him is Shaw. But Mitch is very funny and honest person. One of the worst thing about the book is Stan. Listen to it and you will understand my problem.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Awesome, awesome, and awesome.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Man to be better than the print version?

Havent read the print version kinda of hard while driving.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mitch is, has and always will be my favorite. I missed my calling in life because I should have been a CIA assasin and not an engineer. I think like him and pretty much feel the same about authority. You have right and wrong and it is time to deal with the wrong no matter where they are.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    The vet fire fight.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I always get choked up when thinking about Mitch's wife Anna and their baby, although I would have killed Gould period.

    Any additional comments?

This series is my favorite right up there with Brad Thor's Scott Horvath. I would love to meet one of these guys in person someday to have a few beers and discuss how they came up with the characters.

    "One of His Best!"

Vince Flynn fan or not you're pretty hard to please if you don't love this book. Flynn has a magical way of keeping the action moving without ever coming close to corny. The characters are real and you will quickly get to know them even if you've never read a Flynn book. But, treat yourself and read them all. There are lots of references to the past and you will better understand the sequence of events if you know the history. Rapp, Hurley and Kennedy battle the evil doers once again - all with a hard edged attitude. No flowers and roses in this one. Get invested in Mitch's latest antics. I only wish there were more authors that could write like this. As usual, Guidall tells the story as though its coming straight from his head, not a book. Sheer brilliance.

It is a pity that Vince Flynn lost his life at such an early age. To think of the best novels he could yet write we will miss those brilliant stories and the out hero Mitch Rapp.
