Publisher's summary

Suspended from his job with the LAPD, Harry Bosch must face the darkest parts of his past to track down his mother's killer...even if it costs him his life.

Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.

Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.

Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Critic reviews

"Grabs you and shakes you-and it feels great." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Connelly is at the top of his form in this brilliant mystery. Dick Hill does an outstanding job capturing Bosch's cynicism and anger, confusion and hurt. Hill changes his voice well to portray the other characters, most notably the female police psychiatrist...this is a first-rate production." (AudioFile)

"A powerful book." (Houston Chronicle)

Performer has limited range

Dick Hill does standard narrative quite well. When he does a female voice, the performance devolves into pure annoyance.

Last Coyote, Lone Wolf

Harry Bosch was suspended after his last case, so he has to go rogue in Michael Connelly's fourth entry in his series. After spotting perhaps the last coyote in the Hollywood Hills, Bosch becomes a lone wolf, trying to solve the decades-cold case of his own mother's murder. What he learns about her murder and about his own feelings are not what he expects.

One of the great things I've come to expect from Connelly is looking at the remaining time in the audiobook right after his hero wraps up the case and seeing that there is still an hour or two left. That means unexpected twists and turns. That is what elevates The Last Coyote from so many similar detective stories.

Similar? Rogue cop, angry at a world conspiring against him, lost his badge, lost his house, defies his bosses and internal affairs, rubs fellow cops the wrong way, has to see a shrink against his will, tries to solve a case by himself against orders and obstruction. Yes, we've been here many times before. But this is personal: if you've read previous Bosch books, you know his character. Delving into his past and into his psyche in this much depth is satisfying.

One nagging problem ubiquitous in all early Connellys: the talking villain. In this one, Bosch benefits twice from bad guys who waste precious time explaining things to him instead of just wasting him. Lazy plot device -- lazy way of conveying information to readers, lazy way of giving Bosch time to get out of jams.

Still worth it.

Soul searching mystery

The plot was well thought out and Dick Hill did a great job of narrating. It's a novel that has a lot of introspection on the part of the main character. I honestly enjoyed the book but felt a bit let down at the end. Perhaps because I wanted there to be more, perhaps because it seems as though the the answers no longer were as important, I'm not sure. This is why I only gave it 4 stars.

possibly the best Bosch I've listened to.

I've listened to about 8 Bosch books so far, and most have been out of order.
I have THOROUGHLY enjoyed every single one. I was a little skeptical after reading the description, but found this early book one of the best, most engaging ones so far. the character development is excellent, and the performance portraying the different characters is superb!!!
fans and non fans will live this audio book!!!

The origins of Harry Bosch

This is probably the most personal Harry Bosch book yet. It gets to his beginnings, and explains so much about him. The reader got glimpses before, but never this close. Great case, excellent book. And of course, Dick Hill makes the book. He is the voice of Harry Bosch, save Titus Welliver.
