Publisher's summary

Suspended from his job with the LAPD, Harry Bosch must face the darkest parts of his past to track down his mother's killer...even if it costs him his life.

Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.

Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.

Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Critic reviews

"Grabs you and shakes you-and it feels great." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Connelly is at the top of his form in this brilliant mystery. Dick Hill does an outstanding job capturing Bosch's cynicism and anger, confusion and hurt. Hill changes his voice well to portray the other characters, most notably the female police psychiatrist...this is a first-rate production." (AudioFile)

"A powerful book." (Houston Chronicle)

A particularly good book - superbly performed

This is my favorite Harry Bosch novel out of the 8 I have read. This one gets into Harry's head a bit more, as he tracks down a cold, but extremely important, case. More twists and turns than most novels I have read, but it all fits together nicely. It kept me intrigued to the end. Harry isn't quite as funny as John Corey (Nelson DeMille), but his cases are a little more complex, and perhaps more compelling.

The Last Coyote

What made the experience of listening to The Last Coyote: Harry Bosch Series, Book 4 the most enjoyable?

Mr. Dick Hill's performance was amazing! He does the voices in such a realistic manner and even includes sound effects, as someone talking on a police radio. He just brings the story to life and I can sit back and close my eyes and feel like I'm right there, in the book. Any narrator after him has been a bit of a let down.

What did you like best about this story?

I'm totally into the Bosch series and this one really brought out the personal side of Harry, I think. Just another great story.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Mr. Hill's performances in the Harry Bosch early books and I'm sad that he hasn't done all of them. He really just brings the characters alive and gives them individual personalities.

Good Feel for the Story

What made the experience of listening to The Last Coyote: Harry Bosch Series, Book 4 the most enjoyable?

The pace of this narration fit the story far better than the previous book, Concrete Blond. It is as if the producer has found his or her rhythm. Also, Connelly let the coyote remain a metaphor and not a simile. in that way, he allowed the reader to enter the story. It may have been obvious but it didn't become patronizing.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I mostly play these while working alone and I can pay some attention. I had trouble putting this one down. Perhaps it was the personal investment in the crime that interested me. It was a good illustration of how difficult self definition and boundaries can be when a person is seriously affected.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was the initial Florida visit (not really one scene, but more an episode). I am not sure if Connely intended it, but each scene had Detective Bosch either voluntarily or not had to lower or lose his defenses only to find allies, helpers, or companions.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

There is no Past

Any additional comments?

This may be the prime foundational book in the Harry Bosch series. It is a step in making Bosch a whole person.

It's a winner.

Terrific story and performance. This story gives insight into Harry's mother's unsolved murder of 30 years. He faces many old memories and deals with his guilt. I can't wait to listen to the next Harry Bosch. They keep getting better and better.

Connelly does it again!

I LOVED IT! This was an excellent book, and read by one of my favorite narrators. I finally know who Hieronymus Bosch is and I think I can understand why he is the way he is. I don't know how I've managed to read or listen to every book except this one, I guess better late than never.

This book was full of everything you would expect from detective Bosch. Excitement mystery suspense raw emotions, and of course Harry has to get a little pleasure, it kept me guessing until the end.

This book is one of the reasons I am a cheerleader for Michael Connelly. He is an excellent writer (I can't say that enough) if you've never read or listened to the Harry Bosh series PLEASE do your ears a favor and listen to Dick Hill pull you in to the great detectives world, you'll be glad you did.
