Publisher's summary

The last camel is dead, and Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, her dashing husband, Emerson, and precocious son, Ramses, are in dire straits on the sun-scorched desert sands. Months before, back in cool, green England, Viscount Blacktower had approached them to find his son and his son's new bride, who have been missing in war-torn Sudan for over a decade. An enigmatic message scrawled on papyrus and a cryptic map had been delivered to Blacktower, awakening his hope that the couple was still alive.

Neither Amelia nor Emerson believes the message is authentic, but the treasure map proves an irresistible temptation. Now, deep in Nubia's vast wasteland, they discover too late how much treachery is afoot (and on camelback)...and survival depends on Amelia's solving a mystery as old as ancient Egypt and as timeless as greed and revenge.

Critic reviews

"If Indiana Jones were female, a wife and mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson...Combining a fierce affection for her family with indefatigable independence, stalwart Amelia proves once again an immensely likable heroine." (Publishers Weekly)
"Another interest-holding and humorously told Amelia Peabody Victorian suspense tale." (School Library Journal)
"The plot twists and turns....it's delicious." (Washington Times)

My First Peabody Book

But it won't be my last. Amelia Peabody, a woman before her time, has managed with her famous husband, to get her little family in an
impossible stew. The many twists and turns of the mystery, loaded with Egyptology tidbits make it great listening.

Worth a listen

The other reviews expressing disappointment with Susan O'Malley's narration almost put me off buying this book, but it turned out to be a good listen. I found the plot development was slow for the first 5-6 hours of the book, and was happy enough that the narrator kept a good pace. Ms. O'Mallory's voice is easy to listen to, and as already noted, settled into a good rhythm and consistent characterization for each character. The plot definitely picks up before the halfway mark, and I very much enjoyed the richness of archaeological detail as well as the adventure!

I magnetize

Great story line. You can truly feel for the downtrodden. It needs a sequel. Enjoy!

Wrong narrator

What can I say? Susan O'Malley is no Barbara Rosenblat when it comes to creating these characters. I got the wrong version and within moments I missed the richness of the characters, the evocativeness of her voice as it just adds so much more to these wonderful books. Susan just makes everything flat and bland. Will go buy the Rosenblat version. Hope I didn'tmake this mistake on other volumes in the series and will have to check right away.

Unusual Journey

Totally unique take this time! Overall really enjoyed it but a bit unusual how it ended. Definitely felt more fictitious. Good surprises along the way.

Not my choice for narrator

I have listened to the many audiobooks in the Amelia Peabody series and was extremely dissappointed by this one. Amelia Peabody is British and Susan O'Malley did not even attempt the accents! There is no doubt that the material itself is fabulous and I enjoyed the story itself, but the narration, frankly, was very much NOT to my liking. Barbara Rosenblatt makes the material funny, Susan O'Mally made it a very dull listen. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a recording by Barbara for this one and I was forced to endure it since I had made the purchase without a preview listen. Next time I will just make the time to actually read it, if I have no choice.

Book: wonderful! Narrator: Hope she has a 2nd job!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Downloading the book with Barbara Rosenblat as the narrator.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Last Camel Died at Noon?

When I stopped listening to the book, the narration is THAT bad.

How could the performance have been better?

The fault was mine...I downloaded the book with the WRONG narrator. NOBODY can beat Barbara Rosenblat in narration and this was not even close.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Last Camel Died at Noon?

None, I hate abridged books

Any additional comments?

I am sorry to be so harsh in regards to Susan O' Malley but her voice is incredibly flat and lifeless.
