Publisher's summary

The last camel is dead, and Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, her dashing husband, Emerson, and precocious son, Ramses, are in dire straits on the sun-scorched desert sands. Months before, back in cool, green England, Viscount Blacktower had approached them to find his son and his son's new bride, who have been missing in war-torn Sudan for over a decade. An enigmatic message scrawled on papyrus and a cryptic map had been delivered to Blacktower, awakening his hope that the couple was still alive.

Neither Amelia nor Emerson believes the message is authentic, but the treasure map proves an irresistible temptation. Now, deep in Nubia's vast wasteland, they discover too late how much treachery is afoot (and on camelback)...and survival depends on Amelia's solving a mystery as old as ancient Egypt and as timeless as greed and revenge.

Critic reviews

"If Indiana Jones were female, a wife and mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson...Combining a fierce affection for her family with indefatigable independence, stalwart Amelia proves once again an immensely likable heroine." (Publishers Weekly)
"Another interest-holding and humorously told Amelia Peabody Victorian suspense tale." (School Library Journal)
"The plot twists and turns....it's delicious." (Washington Times)

love the author, hate the narrator

I've listened to most of the Amelia Peabody Series. Barbara Rosenblat is a truly gifted narrator giving depth and interest to these books. For some reason Susan O'Malley is the narrator for this book in the series.

Susan starts out sounding as if she is reading from a text. Fortunately it gets better. Granted, it takes the bulk of the book for this to occur, but it does get better. Unfortunately I suspect it due to Elizabeth Peter's skill as a writer and not Susan's ability as a narrator.

Not as good as the first narrator.

The characters are British. We deserve a British accent from the narrator. Great story but I couldn’t get past the American accent.

Entertaining

Traveling with Peabody is a totally escapist, fun ride. Although her musings can be excessive at times, I greatly enjoyed the book!

Where's Barbara?

Barbara Rosenblat outshines Susan O'Malley as Amelia Peabody. I enjoyed the first 5 books with Barbara and am very disappointed in Susan.

The last camel died at noon by Elizabeth peters narrated by Susan O’Malley

Although many have written that they love the narrator, Rosenblatt, I prefer Susan O’Malley. I wish all of the Elizabeth Peabody novels were read by her. I feel like she captures the character and nature of Amelia, Peabody and Emerson and their family, in a more honest and authentic way. These are wonderful novels whoever narrates them I’m sure you’ll enjoy them, but I am a voiceover artist and an actor so for my own preference Susan O’Malley is a wonderful narrator.

I'm disturbed

This story is up to Elizabeth's excellent standard of suspense and sly humor, but the narration, with its American pronunciations and inflections, loses its edge - sort of like drinking a soda that has gone flat. Just read the book.

Characters who stay with you.

I really enjoy listening to Susan O'Malley's narration. I find myself laughing aloud at Amelia's inner dialogue because of the reader's eloquent interpretation.

Enjoyed the story and reading

Love Susan O’Malley! Wished she could have read the entire series. Tried listening to other reader but I can’t take her voice. Enjoyed the book, O’Malley really gives life to the story.
