Publisher's summary

The office of the public defender is not known as a training ground for bright young litigators. Clay Carter has been there too long and, like most of his colleagues, dreams of a better job in a real firm. When he reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit DC every week.

As he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession’s newest king of torts....

Not my cup of tea

No mystery here, way to much lawyer info, zoned out on the greed. Too predictable

Entertaining.

This was a different kind of book for grisham, more of a cautionary tale than a thriller. It is an interesting read, and will keep you listening, but don't expect fast paced action, or tense drama.

Not my favorite Grisham

Of all the Grisham books- the ending of this one really was a letdown. It's the same old "money can't make you happy" story. I thought for sure there would be a real twist of an ending, but no......... it also took quite a while to really get going. However, I'll always look forward to the next one!

Typical Grisham

Generally speaking I like John Grisham's books, but it seems that they follow a pattern, especially in the way he does his endings. I know he has come out with some new novels recently, and I hope he has been able to change that.

However, I like his writing enough that I have been reading everything he wrote, despite the endings. The story lines themselves have explained a lot to me about the legal profession.

In the King of Torts, the main character makes millions by filing class action lawsuits against drug companies who manufacture drugs with bad side effects and then he loses it all. Find out how, the John Grisham way!

Simply Grisham

Once again, Grisham presents us with another outstanding legal thriller. Just when you thought the other shoe was going to fall.. it does. Beautifully written.

good book and relevant issue!

This is a good read. It is fast paced and the narrator is decent. The Plot is a bit far fetched but we must remember this is fiction. I found the subject of torts to be a currently relevant issue. one personally i don't like as i feel that lawyers merely transfer wealth of others to themselves at the detriment of the client and apparently the author feels the same way.

Wow! What a ride!

Grisham is a master storyteller. Michael Beck is a master narrator. Beck's performance is flawless. As he effortlessly shunts from one personae to the next, you're convinced there must be a host of narrators recounting this tale. The many interesting characters in this work come to life and draw you deep into this Grisham novel right from the start. Clay Carter is an amicable hero with his all-too-human reactions to temptations too hard to resist. Welcome to this fast and furious ride of twists and turns into the underbelly of mass tort litigation. Don't forget your Dramamine!
