Publisher's summary

The office of the public defender is not known as a training ground for bright young litigators. Clay Carter has been there too long and, like most of his colleagues, dreams of a better job in a real firm. When he reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit DC every week.

As he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession’s newest king of torts....

The Great American Novel

When I pick up a Grisham novel I don't expect it to be the "Great American Novel". Like all of his books this one has a good story line, moves fast and is a good diversion.

Disappointing

Just finished three Grisham books set in Mississippi and desperately wanted more. Did not happen with this book. ONLY finished to see how bad it got!

Great Plot

Awesome story on ambition and greed. The protagonist had choices that ultimately affected his career and life. Highly recommend it!

Root of all evil

Suspenseful- intriguing and yet predictable! But as always Gresham delivers a good story! Can't wait for his next!

Struggled to finish... 😔

1st of Mr. Grisham's novels I've struggled to finish. Sad ending & just all seemed to drag on & on.

More JCC!

Thank you John Grisham and Audible! I couldn't put this one down. I loved the character J. Clay Carter. The world of torts, class actions lawsuits, etc. was so very interesting. Please don't let this be the last we hear of JCC.

Great book narrated by a wonderful voice

Great book kept my interest the whole time! The narrator had a wonderful voice and was able to tell the story as if it was happening in front of his face.

New and interesting direction

This book gave a balanced view of torts and tort lawyers. Good food for thought. As always Michael Beck’s narration is superb

Nothing New Here

Let me begin by saying that I think I've either read or listened to every book that Grisham has written. Let me continue by saying that I haven't really enjoyed many of them. I consider his books to be perfect beach, airplane, or commuting material. This book is no different.

No, you won't really like the main character. You won't feel sorry for him when things start going badly for him. You know where the story is going after listening to the first half hour.

Reading a Grisham book is like watching an episode of a television drama. You're not expecting high-brow intellect or overly thought-provoking moral dilemmas. You listen to Grisham because it's a fast-paced story that makes the time fly by.

He delivers that again here.
