Publisher's summary

It was a "million-dollar bullet," a sniper shot delivered from over a mile away. Its victim was no ordinary mark: he was a United States citizen, targeted by the United States government, and assassinated in the Bahamas.

The nation's most renowned investigator and forensics expert, Lincoln Rhyme, is drafted to investigate. While his partner, Amelia Sachs, traces the victim's steps in Manhattan, Rhyme leaves the city to pursue the sniper himself. As details of the case start to emerge, the pair discovers that not all is what it seems.

When a deadly, knife-wielding assassin begins systematically eliminating all evidence-including the witnesses-Lincoln's investigation turns into a chilling battle of wits against a cold-blooded killer.

A very different approach

enjoyed the story involving the Caribbean and military influence. Nice to have a female voice for female characters.

Few first comments

What did you like best about The Kill Room? What did you like least?

The book was only released a few hours ago and I am only one chapter four, so I can not comment on the story, only my first impressions of the narration.
This is the first of the Rhyme books that has used multiple narrators and, so far, I am not impressed. The voice chosen for Rhyme makes him sound weak and not at all in control. The female used for Amanda makes her sound like some valley girl not the in-control cop she is. Hopefully that will change as the book goes on. It almost sounds as if each of the narrators read their parts independently of each other and the parts were edited together. If anyone who makes these decisions reads these reviews, please stick with a single GOOD narrator. Deaver weaves a good story and the wrong narrator can destroy that.

Lousy narration, but a good story

Both Jay Snyder and Edoardo Ballerini are superb narrators who can differentiate characters in the books they read. They don't need other voices to make a book great; combining soloists actually detracts from the quality of them all. January LaVoy didn't do a very good job, and she didn't have much to work with.

But Lincoln does get out and about, and there is a great cop in the Bahamas, and some real excitement! The bad guy is a real sick-o, so we are happy when Rhyme wins the day.

The book is from 2013, so maybe that's why the recording was so bad.

My first Lincoln Rhyme book

I bought an audiobook version for my drive from Atlanta to Orlando, but I was only able to listen to about one third of it during my drive. However, over the past several days in my hotel I have been listening off-and-on, until I finaly finished it just a short time ago. I found the story and the characters very intriguing, although I admit that it took me a few chapters to get into the story. But once I did I was hooked.

The narration was quite well done, and it enhanced the enjoyment of the novel.

One narrator, please!!!

I absolutely hate multiple narrators...it is always jarring and irritating...not at all more "realistic". In fact, sometimes I thought the voice of Sachs was Siri talking to me. Other than that, the story was pretty good.

Indescribably Bad Narrating

By far the WORST audiobook narrating I’ve ever experienced. Not only was the character voice choices terrible, the flow of changing narrators is horrendous. The narration of Rhyme is truly the opposite of what anyone would ever think. Weak, quiet, blah. Totally takes away from his powerful, bold character. The narration for Sachs is just as awful. Weirdly pitched and almost too ditzy sounding. I can’t fathom this. Along with this mess, it’s obvious the narrations were thrown together to make the audiobook. The worst offender is when poor Sachs speaks, there’s no flow, just tossed in. The Lincoln Rhyme novels are all fantastic, this audiobook absolutely does not show it. For how much the audiobooks cost, not wanting to finish this one is irritating. I have read the book, 5 stars for that. 0 for narrating.

Typical Lincoln Rhyme....great read

If you could sum up The Kill Room in three words, what would they be?

There are always several cliff hangers in the Rhyme novels and this one didn't disappoint. Worth a listen.

Any additional comments?

Although I enjoyed the narration, someone needs to tell Jay Snyder that "conch" is pronounced "conk"!!

The Kill Room is a "page turner"!

An exciting book that definitely kept my interest. This story ranks in about the middle of the Deaver spectrum. Good but not great.
