Publisher's Summary

Some mistakes can change your life forever. For Matt Hunter, that mistake came in one terrible moment when his attempt to help a friend and stop a fight resulted in an accidental death. Matt was convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison. Time that his peers spent in college, Matt endured behind bars.

Now, nine years after his release from prison, his innocence long forgotten, he's an ex-con who takes nothing for granted. With his wife Olivia pregnant, and the two of them closing on a house in his hometown, things are looking up. Until the day Matt gets a shocking, inexplicable video call from Olivia's phone. And in an instant, the unraveling begins.

A mysterious man who begins tailing Matt turns up dead. A beloved nun is murdered. And local and federal authorities, including homicide investigator Loren Muse, a childhood schoolmate of Matt's with a troubled past of her own, see all signs pointing to a former criminal with one murder already under his belt...Matt Hunter. Unwilling to lose everything for a second time, Matt and Olivia are forced outside the law in a desperate attempt to save their future together.

An electrifying thrill-ride of a novel that peeks behind the white picket fences of suburbia, The Innocent is at once a twisting, turning, emotionally-charged story and a compelling tale of the choices we make and the repercussions that never leave us.

What the Critics Say

"[Coben's] best book to date." (Publishers Weekly)
"As usual with Coben, an intriguing start, hinging on one out-of-whack technological trick, hurtles into a fast-paced hunter-and-hunted drama. First-rate." (Booklist)

    "Outstanding Standalone"

I really liked this standalone Harlan Coben book. I was pleasantly surprised on how different it is from the Marion Bolitar series. You can hardly go wrong with Scott Brick as narrator.

I read this in under 2 days. Great character development. Great plot. Exciting, suspenseful, drama, emotion; it has it all. Scot Brick does a great job. I wonder why I just read it as the book is almost 10 years old. It is interesting to see how far technology has come in so short of time.

There are few things in life better than losing yourself completely in a really exceptional story.

    Story
    "Starts strong, finishes weak"

Coben is one of my favorite authors. I've read and re-read most because I enjoyed them so much, getting lost in his wonderful stories and captivated by his characters. This started out like so many other Coben gems, strong and riveting right out of the gate. But it all started getting convoluted mid-way and by the end, the bad guys (and there were many of them) were ensnared in a complicated web that I no longer cared very much about. You see, most of the baddies were people we either never got to know at all, or were only vague shadows hanging out in the outer peripheries of the plot. Unlike most Coben villains, they didn't make the flesh crawl because they were strangers to the reader. And that was the fatal flaw in this story. I cared about a few of the characters but only slightly.

If you're a Coben fan, as I am, probably nothing I say will dissuade you from spending a credit or even real money on this book. Heck, Scott Brick is narrating so it's worth the price of admission, right?. But I thought it only right to prepare you for the inevitable disappointment. Even Coben, master of the thriller genre, is entitled to an occasional blunder, right? Well, this is it.

"Not bad, but not my favorite Harlan Coben"

I enjoyed the way the author connects the different characters throughout the book. Interestingly different story. The main reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the annoyingly repeated phrase "you're in deep do do!" Seriously? I love Scott Brick, and as always, his narration adds to the story.

What did you love best about The Innocent?

    The story line was excellent.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. At every turn I thought I had it figured out and something would happen and I would have to re-think that turn again. :-)

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

He is my favorite narrator because of him I bought this audio and enjoyed every minute of it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Some parts made me sad.

    Any additional comments?

If you enjoy a good mystery this audio is well worth the point. Go for it you will love it.

    "Intense but Enjoyable"

Scott Brick has a voice that is easy to listen to making the novel more enjoyable. Coben's writing is always complex anf the The Innocent is no exception with multiple threads running in parallel through out the story. You know they are all going to join up at the end and guessing correctly how they do is part of what Coben is about.

    "Another look"

Reading the blurb about this book I didn't realize I'd read it. In fact, it took an embarrassingly long time for me to realize that I'd read it.

However, it was really fun listening to it afterwords. Usually I'm so focused on the plot turns I don't think usually think about the narration. It's a strong narration and by the end of it I was invested in each of the characters.

The plot turns by the end really begin to stretch credibility, but they often do with Coben.

    "Interesting yarn"

I like Harlen Coben. But, I don't think this is one of his best. However, it did keep my attention. It reminds me of something else I read but I can't place the title. I guess I like his Myron novels a little better.
