Publisher's summary

America has enemies - ruthless people that the police, the FBI, even the military can't stop. That's when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone-cold hitman who never questions orders and always nails his target.

But Will Robie may have just made the first - and last - mistake of his career....

It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn't seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable: He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a 14-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn't an ordinary runaway - her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can't walk away. He needs to help her.

Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he's convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents' deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power. Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl's life... and perhaps his own.

So well put together

Who was your favorite character and why?

Will

Which character – as performed by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy – was your favorite?

Any and all. I love Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy together so every character they read is excellent in my eyes. But I love Will Robie the most out of all.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A thrill.

Any additional comments?

I love the way this audio book was put together, with one main narrator, the male parts put together strictly by the male narrator and was pleasantly surprised that the female spoke only the female written words. It was wonderful! I wish all audio books could be read like this. It quickly addicted me to this series, and I hope all of Baldacci's books are read like this, I will be receiving them all and looking forward to my days at work listening to, and seeing these well read characters in my minds eye. Thanks for bringing them to life Ron and Orlagh.

A guilty pleasure

Excellent suspense! Interesting plot! So well crafted, I didn't CARE about the things in the plot that didn't make sense! The author is a good story teller, that's important.

Having just read some "Grocery Store Checkout Line" novels, this was a welcome relief. It was interesting that the GSCL novels had some of the same problems with plot points making sense, well NOT making sense, but they were so moronically written I felt myself being Patient! This book is well written, it makes a big difference, you are carried along on the slalom. The difference is probably talent.
The elements of an innocent in danger and a dangerous good guy are there but it's a whole different world. The characters feel more realistic, they don't look like they are doing certain things just to force the plot. It feels right. The "Bad Guys" are super secret, super rich, super intelligent(?), super manipulative, and super everything, which I usually find annoying, but the author made me not care.
The plot is complicated, but well written, not forced. A lot of the time you can't figure what's going on, but not because the author can't tell a story, he can!

The narration was excellent.

A good read

What did you love best about The Innocent: A Novel?

The underlying message of life, love, loneliness and honor was inherent throughout.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Very convoluted, not the routine arrow pointing to killer's reasons.

The Innocent

Great piece of writing and an excellent story. I absolutely did not like the sound effects while the story was being read. Orlagh Cassidy & Ron McLarty are wonderful to listen to.
