Publisher's summary

There are stories no one knows. Hidden stories. I love those stories. And since I work in the National Archives, I find those stories for a living. Beecher White, a young archivist, spends his days working with the most important documents of the U.S. government. He has always been the keeper of other people's stories, never a part of the story himself...Until now.

When Clementine Kaye, Beecher's first childhood crush, shows up at the National Archives asking for his help tracking down her long-lost father, Beecher tries to impress her by showing her the secret vault where the president of the United States privately reviews classified documents. After they accidentally happen upon a priceless artifact - a 200-year-old dictionary that once belonged to George Washington, hidden underneath a desk chair, Beecher and Clementine find themselves suddenly entangled in a web of deception, conspiracy, and murder.

Soon a man is dead, and Beecher is on the run as he races to learn the truth behind this mysterious national treasure. His search will lead him to discover a coded and ingenious puzzle that conceals a disturbing secret from the founding of our nation. It is a secret, Beecher soon discovers, that some believe is worth killing for.

Gripping, fast-paced, and filled with the fascinating historical detail for which he is famous, The Inner Circle is a thrilling novel that once again proves Brad Meltzer as a brilliant author writing at the height of his craft.

No- just no.

This is a silly story. Not believable, not compelling. I just felt it went on and on with no real high points. The narrator- forgive me- sounds like some weird action hero from a 50’s black and white film. I finally gave up on it and didn’t look back.

Some books just aren't fpr everyone

By and large, most people enjoyed this book and I can see why - Scott Brick again offers a great performance and the characters/storyline are interesting. I think for me though, it took too many sidetracks and much too much time to develop to keep me interested. I would get caught up in what was going on and then Brad Meltzer would wander down a side street. Once and a while this was fine, but to me at least it seemed to happen way too often. Perhaps I could have made it through the whole listen, but I was not optimistic about the outcome and my staying interested.

Hooked!

Where does The Inner Circle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It had me hooked only few pages into the book. I call this genre "nerdventure". It is smart and fun.

Slow starter, but give it a chance...

Any additional comments?

This book was a slow starter, but once I was about two hours into it, I didn't want to stop listening.

Probably better if you read it yourself

I found this story, which is a good story, difficult to follow due to switching to this person and that person's point of view. Meltzer likes to be tricky in his storytelling with what he thinks are smart little conversations or tidbits which I just think are designed to give you a hard time! Also, I wish Scott Brick would stop doing his sing song thing. He seems to be narrating every darn novel I want to listen to these days, and in the exact same way. The protagonists take on wussy personalities with Brick's narration. I just don't think that he hears himself.
