The Hunters: A Presidential Agent Novel

Two brutal murders and millions of missing dollars in the growing UN/Iraq oil-for-food scandal have led Castillo and his team to an estancia in Uruguay, where the man they seek is murdered right before their eyes. Who is responsible? Most likely, the people higher up in the dirty-money chain - those willing to risk anything to keep their secrets from being revealed.

Publisher's Summary

The Hunters picks up right where The Hostage left off.

They've left just enough of a trail, though, for Castillo to pick up the scent. And with carte blanche from the President of the United States to follow it wherever it takes him, he ends up...well, not exactly where he expected.

What the Critics Say

"The Castillo novels offer timely plots and enough firepower to keep the action-adventure crowd happy." (Booklist)
"You must admire Dick Hill's smooth, exciting performance as Castillo flits from country to country on his quest. Hill gracefully transitions from character to character, whether German, French, Russian, Spanish, or Hungarian." (AudioFile)

"Excellent, but must read in sequence"

Joseph, get a clue. Each of the "Presidential Agent" books builds on the previous one. Despite the recapitulation with which it starts, this book really depends on the previous ones. I found it absorbing and satisfying, except for some minor points. It's "algorithm," not "logarithm." There were some other bloopers but I didn't take notes. Castillo is tiresomely consumed by self-doubt. His difficulty with keeping his cell phone charged is a bit bizarre.

That said, the locales are exquisitely detailed and the bureaucratic procedure and politics are illuminating. This series of books is for readers who appreciate detail and in-depth portrayal of the missions.

"Another great book in the sequel"

WEB Giffin has written another great terrorist novel. Most of the characters are the same as in earlier novels. The action is face paced and the story line has many twists and turns. He is an excellent story teller. You get to know the characters and his plot is easy to follow.

    Strongly recommended

    "Download or Editing problem?"

While some have commented on the repetition from book to book, the author must include enough information to allow the book to stand on its own apart from the other books in the series.

I was enjoying "the listen" until 2 hours into the 3rd download, when one segment (about 7 minutes) was repeated 4 times and another was repeated twice. I don't know if this was a problem with my download, or if the editor had a "brain burp" while putting the offering together. MOST annoying, and I hope the situation doesn't occur in other audiobook.

I'm enjoying the stories, and can live with the repetition of the back-story plot. The reader's performance is great-- and I'll continue to listen to the rest of the series.

    "The Hunters"

I listened to 4 hours and almost fell asleep. I drive a lot and the details that are in this book are way more than needed. It jumps all around confusing the listener.

"Dear Mr Griffin, please find a decent editor"

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series. They are long, but you really get to know the characters and I enjoy the detailed accounts of how the politics and operations work. But this third book will probably be my last in this series. At least 1/2 the book is spent bringing in new characters and then having the protagonist explain what's happened in the previous stories....over and over and over. There isn't much here, maybe a 1/3 of the book is "new" stuff. With decent editing the The Hostage and this book could have easily been combined into one good story.

The only bright spot was Dick Hill's narration. I noticed a few comments that they didn't care for him. I thought he was brilliant... really brings the story (what story there is) to life and helps to keep the cast of characters understandable through different accents and voices.

    "A pretty good yarn"

Griffin fans will enjoy the Hunters. Typical Griffin in an expanded format. Should be read after reading the Hostage.Reader is excellent. Somebody should tell WEB it's "algorithm" not "logarithm"
    Other than that first rate.

"I Just Kept Waiting for the Story to Get Going"

There is a very simple story line here that never delivers any bang for the buck.

Most of the book is spent away from the main story line to develop the characters, which the author does fairly well.

Likewise, the characters itertwining with the politics of operating as a spy network is also fairly interesting, but mostly unexciting.

I teetered between a 2 and a 3 and went ahead with a 3 as the story was narrated well. Dick Hill, the narrator, is good - as usual.

I will probably try another Griffin book as my father is a fan and recommends him. He did tell me that this one was not as good as his others.

Otherwise, I would probably not choose another Griffin book.

"Active and Engaging But Not As Good As Books 1 & 2"

I liked the book but did think there was too much thinking and explaining going on. Charlie is good so why does he doubt himself. It's clear these guys are focused on their jobs and it's clear that it's a special ops story which is why we keep buying these books. I got tired of their antics but still enjoyed the characters.

Not sure but I think I'll be stopping with this book since the reviews for the next ones are very poor. We'll see. The narrator, Dick Hill, is amazing. He switches accents like a true linguist and makes the story move along. Not sure I'd like reading these books since it is the voices that give it the punch. Kudos to WEB Griffin for his masterly writing.

    "Rapt Attention"

Another great book in the Presidential Agent series. I enjoyed the interaction of the many US agencies and wondered in amazement how all of these things might come to pass in the real world. Nevertheless...on to book #4.
