Publisher's summary

The latest instalment of the irresistibly charming, perennially best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

Precious Ramotswe has always idolised her father, the late Obed Ramotswe. She feels that she knows all about his life - but does she? Sometimes our parents surprise us, and we discover that things were not quite what we thought them to be. And the same goes for Mma Makutsi, Mma Ramotswe's feisty assistant, who also makes certain discoveries about her own past that cause some surprise.

The placid world of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is further disturbed by the arrival in Gaborone of somebody whom Mma Ramotswe - and Mr JLB Matekoni, for that matter - definitely do not want to see. Of course calm eventually prevails - as it always does in the timeless world of these remarkable ladies.

Fans around the world adore the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's premier lady detective. In this delightful series, Mma Ramotswe - with help from her loyal co-director, Mma Makutsi - navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humour and the occasional cup of tea.

Traditionally built satisfaction

Since beginning this wonderful series I am sure I have become just a little Botswanian! Who could not be be wistful about cattle, Acacia trees and little white vans? I know I have become a little more 'traditionally built' since starting this series and I may even have been heard to whisper to my shoes occasionally! What Joy these books are and what a masterful job Adjoa Andoh does of bringing it all to life. I will mourn the day I have to say goodbye!

A little bit more research on accents needed

This story is typical of AMS, but the narrator’s accent, intonation and cadence was more Nigerian than Tswana. A pity. A pity, too, that she did not learn how certain expressions are made, as that was glaringly missing. I chose to overlook most of that, as it’s a good story, in the usual AMS style, but Charlie’s voice was....can’t sugar-coat it!....just awful! No man ever sounds like that, least of all a ladies-man!

Great book!

Another wonderful book about the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Love all Alexander McCall Smith's ... they are so entertaining and his characters' observations on life give much food for thought. Congratulations to Adjoa Andoh - she is such a talented narrator. I'm always sorry even I get to the end of the books.
