    "No, No, No!!!!"

The first Cody Hoyt book was terrific, and I was looking forward to following him through a new story, but this was a huge letdown. The primary reason is one I can't share because it would ruin it for anyone who still wants to read the book, but it was a major upset and just plain disappointing ... tell me if you don't agree. Secondary reasons are that the "bad guy" was (a) just too creepy and unpleasant and (b) got way too much focus; the backup detective was very uninteresting and had the depth of a mud puddle; the back story about Hoyt's problems with his superiors was piecemeal and had little heft. And last but far from least the ending was no ending at all, and was a complete downer. Only real plus was the narrator who was pretty good, despite the storyline. This one got a big thumb's down from me.

    "The dark side"
Would you try another book from C.J. Box and/or Holter Graham?

I have read every book C.J. has written and am a big fan. The Highway seemed to take a turn to the dark side and I did not like it, very disturbing and obviously will have a sequel.

If you’ve listened to books by C.J. Box before, how does this one compare?

    Not as good, too dark.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment

    "Excellent story. Great Narration."

Fast paced story. CJ Box is one of my favorites. This one is a bit sad, but overall a great listen.

    "What a twist"

I am not sure how I will write this review without giving away any plot spoilers, but I promise not to give anything away even at the risk of being to vague for a decent review.
This book takes off on some familiar ground and is very entertaining and is obviously setting the stage for another well done, thought provoking, C.J. Box thriller. Bam! out of nowhere something happens that changes the course of all the following events, and I cannot talk about it or it will impact your experience with this book, and I cannot mention the downstream events either, or it will lead you to an obvious plot spoiler.
Suffice it to say that Box is one of my favorite authors, he writes great characters and involves them in suspenseful thrillers intelligently written around colorful locals in the American west. I think C.J. Box has yet to write a bad book, and this book continues the unbroken streak.
    Highly recommended

    Any additional comments?

Not your typical series development. A pretty good story, but premised on some highly unlikely scenarios and alliances. The damsel-in-distress makes for a good page-turner, though, although the ditzy damsel is both hard to take and hard to believe: Mr. Box doesn't so much strain credulity as simply fail to acknowledge it.

"Not the usual CJ Box Greatness..."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Absolutely! The opportunity to demonstrate the power of change from a irresponsible drunk to a reformed law enforcement officer was prematurely eliminated. I won't ruin the story for others, but I am sure the author could have highlighted the protagonist not just in this story but in many more to follow.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I think the author could have once again made the protagonist the "hero" and once again demonstrate that justice will be served.

Which character – as performed by Holter Graham – was your favorite?

    Cody!!

Could you see The Highway being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No. With what happened in the book, I believe it will be a buzz kill.

    Any additional comments?

I fell in love with the Cody character because he showed that even when your life seems like it is headed in a disastrous direction, it can be turned around with the right motivation. I was very disappointed by the outcome of this book.

    "Poor plot with disappointing ending"

I'm afraid this sequel to Back of Beyond doesn't cut it. It starts out promising but soon becomes disjointed when the main protagonist is killed off leaving the reader with no one to identify with, no discovery ( the evidence is handed over without any due process) and the antagonist dies without any trouble. Not your typical CJ Box work..two thumbs down..

    "Disappointing"
What did you like best about The Highway? What did you like least?

The characters fall right into place book after book. I like CJ Box, read all the books, however this one was a little too dark for me. Not sure I like where the story line is going for the next book.

Would you recommend The Highway to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably would recommend with some reservations! Because of the story line!

Which character – as performed by Holter Graham – was your favorite?

Cody has always been "My kind of guy"

Was The Highway worth the listening time?

Yes I'm glad I listened to it.

    Any additional comments?

Don't understand why the protagonist has to be so crazy/sick!!

    "Slightly different"

I enjoy C.J. Box for his characters and vivid descriptions of Wyoming and Montana. This book has much less of those qualities. It is a horrifying story, well done, but leaves me with the confirmed feeling that "people are just no damn good."

    "Not my CJ Box"
What disappointed you about The Highway?

Not you typical CJ Box and Joe Pickett sort of book

Would you ever listen to anything by C.J. Box again?

    Very questionable.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Okay - couldn't get past the story line.
