Publisher's summary

The inspiration for the new ABC series Big Sky. Winner of the Edgar Award for Best Novel, the New York Times best-selling author of Back of Beyond and Breaking Point and the creator of the Joe Pickett series is back.

"If CJ Box isn't already on your list, put him there." (USA Today)

When two sisters set out across a remote stretch of Montana road to visit their friend, little do they know it will be the last time anyone might ever hear from them again. The girls - and their car - simply vanish. Former police investigator Cody Hoyt has just lost his job and has fallen off the wagon after a long stretch of sobriety. Convinced by his son and his former rookie partner, Cassie Dewell, he begins the drive south to the girls' last known location.

As Cody makes his way to the lonely stretch of Montana highway where they went missing, Cassie discovers that Gracie and Danielle Sullivan aren't the first girls who have disappeared in this area. This majestic landscape is the hunting ground for a killer whose viciousness is outmatched only by his intelligence. And he might not be working alone.

Time is running out for Gracie and Danielle...Can Cassie overcome her doubts and lack of experience and use her innate skill? Can Cody Hoyt battle his own demons and find this killer before another victim vanishes on the highway?

The dark side

Would you try another book from C.J. Box and/or Holter Graham?

I have read every book C.J. has written and am a big fan. The Highway seemed to take a turn to the dark side and I did not like it, very disturbing and obviously will have a sequel.

If you’ve listened to books by C.J. Box before, how does this one compare?

Not as good, too dark.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment

No, No, No!!!!

The first Cody Hoyt book was terrific, and I was looking forward to following him through a new story, but this was a huge letdown. The primary reason is one I can't share because it would ruin it for anyone who still wants to read the book, but it was a major upset and just plain disappointing ... tell me if you don't agree. Secondary reasons are that the "bad guy" was (a) just too creepy and unpleasant and (b) got way too much focus; the backup detective was very uninteresting and had the depth of a mud puddle; the back story about Hoyt's problems with his superiors was piecemeal and had little heft. And last but far from least the ending was no ending at all, and was a complete downer. Only real plus was the narrator who was pretty good, despite the storyline. This one got a big thumb's down from me.

What a twist

I am not sure how I will write this review without giving away any plot spoilers, but I promise not to give anything away even at the risk of being to vague for a decent review.
This book takes off on some familiar ground and is very entertaining and is obviously setting the stage for another well done, thought provoking, C.J. Box thriller. Bam! out of nowhere something happens that changes the course of all the following events, and I cannot talk about it or it will impact your experience with this book, and I cannot mention the downstream events either, or it will lead you to an obvious plot spoiler.
Suffice it to say that Box is one of my favorite authors, he writes great characters and involves them in suspenseful thrillers intelligently written around colorful locals in the American west. I think C.J. Box has yet to write a bad book, and this book continues the unbroken streak.
Highly recommended

Best hang on to something! What a ride

Definitely a story of dark and scary subject matter and a surprising twist that bummed me out - but with that said this story held my attention from beginning to end and the narrator was excellent. I'm not going to say much because this is one book a reader needs to go into without any preconceived ideas.Being a female who travels by herself and lives behind unlocked doors, I have to admit I think I need to sleep with my flare gun close at hand - or something. Makes one think about the creeps out there in or world. CJ Box is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers but I think the next thing I download needs to be some happy chic lit book. I'll need to beef up my "feel safe" attitude after this one. I would have give the book a 5 star across the board except the story took me a bit past my comfort level but it doesn't mean it will take you that close.

Messing with my expectations

I've listened to nearly all the C.J. Box on Audible, skipping only the one that appears from the plot summary and reviews to lean a little too Tea Party for me, but my respect for his story-telling is high. This time out, some of the reviews that are negative appear to be disappointed in a plot development: A heroine moves to the forefront after a shocking development. One reviewer claimed she is dull as mud.

I like mud and those animals who dwell there, but this woman doesn't and isn't. She's female. Not a female who's the next best thing to a guy, but a woman, acting like an adult, making mistakes and reaching beyond them. She steps up.

The bad guys are wicked, but not cartoons. They ring true. They're worse than the bad cops in Box's "Blue Heaven," but in that vein.

Few novelists working today have as rich a sense of the contemporary American West as Box. Despite some gruesome plot elements, not lingered over, thank God, listening was a pleasure. Box loves the land and everybody trying to make a go of it on the land in an honorable way, even if they break a few rules now and then. By the time the heroine is ready to break a major one, I was with her all the way.

Box never overwrites. His sentences don't call attention to themselves, preening like peacocks. They're often beautiful, always crisp and frequently worth writing down. I believe in his characters. Excellent narrator.

Slightly different

I enjoy C.J. Box for his characters and vivid descriptions of Wyoming and Montana. This book has much less of those qualities. It is a horrifying story, well done, but leaves me with the confirmed feeling that "people are just no damn good."

Excellent story. Great Narration.

Fast paced story. CJ Box is one of my favorites. This one is a bit sad, but overall a great listen.

Good writing - BAD BAD BAD story line

I have seen enough on the news to know that this kind of thing happens BUT I do not want to read about it for entertainment. I should have paid heed to another reviewer who wrote "I have read every book C.J. (Box) has written and am a big fan. The Highway seemed to take a turn to the dark side and I did not like it, very disturbing..."

Disappointing

What did you like best about The Highway? What did you like least?

The characters fall right into place book after book. I like CJ Box, read all the books, however this one was a little too dark for me. Not sure I like where the story line is going for the next book.

Would you recommend The Highway to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably would recommend with some reservations! Because of the story line!

Which character – as performed by Holter Graham – was your favorite?

Cody has always been "My kind of guy"

Was The Highway worth the listening time?

Yes I'm glad I listened to it.

Any additional comments?

Don't understand why the protagonist has to be so crazy/sick!!
