Editorial reviews

Prepare for one of the fiercest battle’s you’ll ever hear in The Heroes, written by the brilliant Joe Abercrombie with the complete and unabridged fantasy audiobook narrated by English actor Steven Pacey. Black Dow is a legend. He will kill any man that stands in his way. When the Union Army starts heading towards the North, he prepares for battle and for victory. There are only two people brave enough to fight against this impenetrable enemy alongside him. This is an all-encompassing saga of incredible scope and unparalleled depth. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's summary

They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter, and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbour, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

Over three bloody days of battle, the fate of the North will be decided. But with both sides riddled by intrigues, follies, feuds and petty jealousies, it is unlikely to be the noblest hearts or even the strongest arms that prevail.

Three men. One battle. No Heroes.

lots of battles but. unfortunately no plot

there is a lot of action on the book , the whole pointlessness of war ... I think the title is meant to be ironic. narrator did a good job with the material. unfortunately there is very little in the way of a plot. no antagonist. no protagonist . no one to have any empathy or feeling towards. I didn't care what happened to anybody. I also don't like how he turned Shivers into such an unappealing bitter one dimensional character. he served no purpose to the story. I'm not reading further into the series.

Great performance, as always

Steven Pacey was awesome once again, the story however... Not my favourite from Joe Abercrombie if I am being honest. This does not mean that I'll not be continuing with the series/books in this universe though, far from it. The heroes did have some cool scenes and the vast majority of the characteres were really enjoyable. But it has too many battle scenes for my liking and I was a wee bit bored at times.

Stands afar off

Good writing, however it stands too far off on its own. The scope of the story was limited, possibly deliberately but unsuited to my epic tastes. Had its moments of sheer brilliance but two many new characters to get a real feel for.
