Editorial reviews

A suspenseful must-listen, The Good House is about a haunted house originally owned by Angela Touissant's Haitian grandmother, Marie Touissaint. Angela tries to uncover the source of the evil plaguing the area and in the process discovers her own mystical powers. Read with great range by Robin Miles, it's a frightening experience that will keep you listening with the lights on.

Traveling back and forth in time, the listener is sucked up into every moment as the story reaches its thrilling climax. Miles captures and makes the most of each moment of terror and suspense like a guide who tells you only as much as you need to know. She also shows great skill as her voice switches from male to female, elderly Haitian woman to small-town Sheriff.

Overall, a story that would make any person squirm, but so engrossing you just can't help but listen.

Critic reviews

"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." Worth the 21 hours

I was interested by the premise of the book but leery b/c of the length. It ended up being worth it to me though. I enjoyed that it had a slow build up. The eerie & intrigue was delivered in perfect increments. Each character was sufficiently explored and that really helped pull you into the story. Some of the accents were slightly grating but not enough to matter. Loved the ending.

Loved!

Suspenseful, engaging and a great story. I couldn’t stop listening! Yes, it’s long but worth it. I’m sad to have the experience over. Nicely done to the author and the narrator.

Suspense all throughout!! Wonderful novel!!

I took a chance on branching out to another author and overall type of novel!
I am absolutely ecstatic I did! The book is so beautifully written and suspenseful!
The details and descriptions are so eloquently written that I felt I was there watching it happen before me!
It started out strong and kept my attention the entire way and it ended perfectly !!
I am so thrilled I found a new author to enjoy and I am so excited to read or listen to all of her books!!
The lady who read the story on audible made it so easy to follow and enjoy as well!!
Thank you so much for creating and publishing such a wonderful treasure of a novel!!
Thank you!! Hands down a must read!
Only caution to make for readers .. it does have a few explicit details /language (not at all overly inappropriate, but it is mentioned in some areas throughout the book , that’s all!) ..just a little note if you are a parent who is listening to this on an audio book in a car or on speaker as you are doing house chores! Ha!! ..

Slowburn Seductive Horror

Gothic horror with a Creole twist, Due creates a world that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing the reader in with what seems at first a simple ghost story and then weaving a complex tale of family history, magic, spirits and loa. One of the best conclusions I've ever read, The Good House is a horror story with heart, reminding the reader of the importance of family and heritage.

Phenomenal story and narrator!

The story had me hooked from the very beginning. Due's story is engaging, and it is mad even more so by the narration. Miles brings every character to life. 20/10 would recommend.

The Kind of Scary I Like

Enjoyed this story with the subtle touch of the supernatural. Told from a perspective of "real" family with their own complications and dysfunction. The narrator, Robin Miles, did a great job with the different voices. Clear to tell the difference between each character. I plan to check out more books by Due.

I loved it!

The story is great and the narrator is wonderful. It is very similar to a Stephen King novel but I think I like the way this author writes better. I'd like to see it as a movie or show one day.

Magical and outstanding

Everything about this story is magical. It is a supernatural story whose central character is Angie - - an heir to her vodou mambo grandmother's beautiful house. Something unspeakable happens to Angie's family in the very beginning and from there the story unravels, exposing the family's and the town's secrets and memories. The writing is flawless, the story flows nicely, and the ending is very satisfying. It draws you in and you really feel for the characters. It was my first book by Tananarive Due, but it won't be the last. And, if course, the narrator deserves special kudos. Robin Miles must be one of the best narrators I have heard. She is so versatile in her ability to portray characters of both sexes, different ages and accents. And she has a rare ability to fade into the background while narrating so that you only hear the story and the characters and not weird affectations and noises some narrators make. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes speculative fiction.
