Editorial reviews

A suspenseful must-listen, The Good House is about a haunted house originally owned by Angela Touissant's Haitian grandmother, Marie Touissaint. Angela tries to uncover the source of the evil plaguing the area and in the process discovers her own mystical powers. Read with great range by Robin Miles, it's a frightening experience that will keep you listening with the lights on.

Traveling back and forth in time, the listener is sucked up into every moment as the story reaches its thrilling climax. Miles captures and makes the most of each moment of terror and suspense like a guide who tells you only as much as you need to know. She also shows great skill as her voice switches from male to female, elderly Haitian woman to small-town Sheriff.

Overall, a story that would make any person squirm, but so engrossing you just can't help but listen.

Critic reviews

"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." A must listen to story

When the story first started didn't think I would like it. As the story matured it gained momentum and pulled me in and the narration was great as well. All around enjoyable story and narration. Highly recommended.

Loved this story

Where does The Good House rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my favorites.

Have you listened to any of Robin Miles’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to this narrator before. I liked her narration, it was very dramatic. She pulled off the accents for different characters well.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

You really want to see certain characters do well and others... you want to see defeated.

Would not recommend.

The narration was good in this book. But other than that, I really did not like it. This book is long and I just couldn't wait for it to be over so that I can go on to something else. I guess I must not be into voodoo very much. I'm sorry I wasted a credit on it, but I listened to the end. I would not recommend.

Long but good!

I choose this book because of the reviews and the editors pick.

The story is of a family with a history in "voodoo". At one point its use becomes evil and the next generations must repair the damage.

Robin Miles did a fantastic job with narration. I could feel the time frames that the story was in based on the way Due writes and the voices Ms Miles had. As Due must take us back to understand what had happened over 60 years ago.

Because of the outstanding narration and the unpredictable ending I was able to finish this long book.
If you have a hard time with long books as I do. Do your best to finish just to say 'huh that"s what would have happened".

18 hours of listening, its a good, I only removed on star from story because it's so long.

Wow!

I picked up The Good House after reading The Witching Hour by Anne Rice--which was good, not great, but left me wanting another read about Voodoo-like witchcraft. This book seemed like it would fit the bill. What I did not expect was the emotional depth of this book. I had expected something light and fluffy--a typical haunted house story. What I got was a book that broke my heart several times and then melted it back together. I'm shocked by how much I loved this book--it's surprisingly one that leaves you thinking long after.

The narrator was perfect. She may have gotten her accents a little washed together at a time or two (a little ghetto sneaking in to the farm boy, a little small town sneaking into the Oakland teen), but it didn't matter because overall, Robin Miles's style was that perfect audiobook style that makes you forget one person is reading because each character is distinct, each brought to life. And in general, her voice is wonderfully smooth, easing you into parts that might be uncomfortable with a less talented narrator.

I should mention that there is some explicit sexual content (the main reason I was thankful to the narrator, as I've learned that unskilled narrators can turn sex-scenes embarrassingly uncomfortable). This book is definitely for a reader who likes their grittiness, but nothing in the book ended up seeming gratuitous--it just seemed honest and real, which is an excellent quality to bring to a supernatural story.

I could ramble on about how passionately I recommend this book, but I need to run off and see if this author has any more books.

Definitely the best book I have read in a long time!

Great surprise

I was trying to branch out from my Stephen King phase and took a chance on this story.

It's well worth listening to.
The voice of the narrator is great, tho she sounds a little dry mouth at times which isn't pleasant when you are listening thru headphones

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I had never listen to anything from this author before now I find myself searching out everything that she has written. It is such a well written story that you do not want to stop listening. It’s riveting from beginning to end. I highly highly recommend this book and this author. It was such a joy to listen to such a well written well executed and well narrated story.
