Editorial reviews

A suspenseful must-listen, The Good House is about a haunted house originally owned by Angela Touissant's Haitian grandmother, Marie Touissaint. Angela tries to uncover the source of the evil plaguing the area and in the process discovers her own mystical powers. Read with great range by Robin Miles, it's a frightening experience that will keep you listening with the lights on.

Traveling back and forth in time, the listener is sucked up into every moment as the story reaches its thrilling climax. Miles captures and makes the most of each moment of terror and suspense like a guide who tells you only as much as you need to know. She also shows great skill as her voice switches from male to female, elderly Haitian woman to small-town Sheriff.

Overall, a story that would make any person squirm, but so engrossing you just can't help but listen.

Critic reviews

"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." Featured Article: Must-Hear Contemporary Black Women Authors

It’s a fact that a high percentage of the best books that have come out in this century have been written by Black women authors. (Truth be told, there are so many excellent works that this list could simply centered on the best contemporary authors and still be accurate.) Nevertheless, Black women’s stories deserve to be heard, and when the stories are this compelling, this engaging, and this beautifully written, they’re impossible to ignore.

The story is great, narration incredible!

Great intense thoughtful story. So well written (like how "real people" would talk) and the detail, the description, the feeling you get from the story is amazing.
Have to give massive props to the narrator who performed more than 10 voices to this story! Super impressive; really aids story telling and enables the "reader" to follow along. Such a tough undertaking, especially with accents, in addition to having great acting ability. Super kudos to Robin!

VooDoo

it was really an up hill climb through the first several chapters but I found once I could listen for longer spells it began to pick up. No prior knowledge of Voodoo made this a bit confusing as well and it is implied you understand. I will definitely try another of her books! As a bonus, I have figured out a great costume for Halloween

A Rich and Detailed Story That Did Not Disappoint

For context, I’m a creative writing student in my third year of college, specializing in the horror genre. I read this book because my professor suggested it, stating that the book was particularly well written and I should read it and take notes on the author’s use of exposition. Since I’m a busy mother and full-time student I slacked and bought the audiobook. I am so glad I did! My professor wasn’t lying, this book is rich in plot, detail, and dialogue and is noticeably well written. I enjoyed it immensely and the narrator’s performance was superb. I finished it in two days and I will definitely be purchasing the book to add to my home library.

This book will stick with you forever!

NOLA504NERDS BLOG
The Good House is one of those books that will stick with you forever. It was very intense and intriguing. It taught me a few things about a culture that I didn’t understand. Tananarive Due replayed scenes from different perspectives and only revealed pertinent information at the right/best moments. Her story telling made it so you couldn’t put the book down! The characters were so well developed and powerful.  I love how strong and resourceful Angela Toussaint is. The Toussaints family home has a horror story that spans generations. The Toussaints have a history of voodoo and mystery that makes this story even more intriguing.  But never forget that the house is a major character in this book as well.  The ending was kind of like cheating… but I was very happy with it. I think it ended the way it needed to. Though it’s a creepy and chilling horror novel, The Good House is also about grief, loss, marriage, and heritage. Shout out to Robin Miles, the narrator for the audiobook. She did an excellent job!

Just...Wow

I want to read this again immediately. Robin Miles has a way with characters (so much so I'll ready any book she narrates) but this story was *chef's kiss* What I love most is in addition to "The Shining" vibes it gave, there was so much ATR (African Traditional Religion) elements that sent this book over the top for me. It was half adult thriller and half YA coming of age novel. Amazing Read.

Amazing Performance

Really the type of horror book I was looking for. After book after book of horror books where you could careless if someone died this book made you really get to know the characters. The voice actor was really amazing. I could listen to her read the back of a cereal box and enjoy it!

Well Written/Wonderful Narration

Suspenseful and well written especially compared to some of the male written "horror" I've listened to recently. The characters are well thought out and it's easy to follow along during each character's perspective. The author gives enough description about each scene without boring you to death. I was pulled in right away and looked forward to listening to where the story lead. The only thing I cannot understand, and this is with a lot of books of this genre, is the sexual imagery. I just want to feel suspense and a little fright. I don't want to hear about anyone's hard on, or sexual yearning, especially teenagers. Other than that, worth the listen. I must note: the narrator did a fabulous job. I really enjoyed her ability to make the characters and therefore the story, come alive!

Great read! Different than what I usually read.

I love murder mysteries and this book popped up some how. It got me interested from the start and I fell in love with some of the characters. Very well written and the narrator does a great job giving every character their own uniqueness.
