Editorial reviews

A suspenseful must-listen, The Good House is about a haunted house originally owned by Angela Touissant's Haitian grandmother, Marie Touissaint. Angela tries to uncover the source of the evil plaguing the area and in the process discovers her own mystical powers. Read with great range by Robin Miles, it's a frightening experience that will keep you listening with the lights on.

Traveling back and forth in time, the listener is sucked up into every moment as the story reaches its thrilling climax. Miles captures and makes the most of each moment of terror and suspense like a guide who tells you only as much as you need to know. She also shows great skill as her voice switches from male to female, elderly Haitian woman to small-town Sheriff.

Overall, a story that would make any person squirm, but so engrossing you just can't help but listen.

Critic reviews

"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." Great writing and narration

This was my first Due sampling and I'm eager now for Audible to get her previous works. The characters and settings were extremely believable and the storyline was engrossing as a result. Very well written work, brilliantly narrated.

Excellent

I really liked this book. I plan to listen to other books by the author as soon as they become available on Audible. The author's descriptive skills made this an easy book to follow. Although there were a lot of flashbacks, each one was dated so it was always obvious. All the characters were fleshed-out and believable and interesting.

Excellent Writer and Narrator !

As a reader/listener of Stephen King's books and especially the Dark Tower series I listened to a most excellent narration by Robin Miles. I would read anything she narrates. I thought the writer Tananarive Due was kinder than King to kill off one of the main characters in chapter 1 before getting the reader to identify with and despise the sudden death. She then did a very good job of building characters you would hate to see come to harm. King's blood bath style is there in the mid to end sections.
However this story is full of twists and turns and doesn't have the unfair Cujo ending that King first alarmed readers with. Higly reccommend this as an audible book that will keep you awake on the road.

Bland: well performed but not scary.

The author's been compared to Stephen King in but I disagree. Stephen King is scary. This book is not. If you want King, you'll be disappointed. If you like daytime TV stories like Ghost Wisperer, this one is for you.

You Will Remember It Long After It's Over

Exceptionally well written, The Good House pulls you in with the Black Magic and Voodoo of the Bayou and totally surrounds you with the cajun culture. Robin Miles is one of the most talented narrators I have heard. Each voice is rich with accent and accuracy as she switches from character to character. So glad I read this one. It's excellent.

The most amazing narrator!

Would you listen to The Good House again? Why?

Yes, definitely. The characters were well-realized and sympathetically related; I felt that I took the journey with each of them. The moments of horror experienced by the characters were mixed with intervals of life and hope.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Good House?

Becca's first appearance gave me chills.

Have you listened to any of Robin Miles’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I plan to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Corey's death and Angela's reaction to it--a central plot point and wrenching to consider.

Any additional comments?

Robin Miles is an incredibly gifted narrator, and gave each character his or her own unique voice.

Great writing, great narrator, slow on the horror

This book has beautiful prose, is primarily driven by its characters, and the author makes poignant commentary on several social issues while creating an intricate and enjoyable story. The narrator is superb! She gives an exceptional performance and manages to only enhance the writing.

However, the "haunted house" aspects of the book are slow to reveal themselves and at times seem almost secondary to the story.

If you are looking for a good book with rich characters you can care about, this is worth the read. If you are looking for scary haunts or horrific thrills, this may be too subtle or slow.

Fun, spooky read with great narration

Just an old-fashioned, ancient elemental monster/family curse thriller. Well-written and well-narrated. The only downside are a couple long, pointless sex scenes.

Good story

family intrigue, horror, and mystery. I enjoyed this story quite a bit and often couldn't wait to get back to it. The narration was well done as well. The voodoo was interesting but not overwhelming.

Great story and performance!

I was a bit skeptical about this book but was pleasantly surprised at the first listen. It’s a great ghost story and Robin Mikes does a great job with the Creole voices
