Publisher's summary

When Cash Harris visits his father for the first time after a 15 year estrangement, things don't go anywhere near as planned. By the end of the night, he finds himself embroiled in a plot to destabilise the government, his father has been assassinated, and he discovers a shocking truth that would have fundamentally altered his life 15 years earlier.

However, all of this pales into insignificance when, along with his best friend and ex-fiancee, he fights for his innocence and the chance to save a world they didn't even know needed saving. They uncover the truth that has been alluding mankind from its very inception. Life, the universe - everything... nothing is as it really seems.

Super Evil needs Super Heroes

What did you like best about The God Complex: A Thriller? What did you like least?

The best part of this book was the ending. It did offer an unusual twist at the end, that made me up its rating to a 3 overall. The part I liked the least involved the petty conversations between the main characters in the midst of the time of greatest import and struggle.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Reading the book was tedious enough. Don't think I would give another two hours to it.

Good story till the end

The book was really going very well until the very end. Maybe the author was trying for one more twist, but came off as a cheat.

Interesting but unfulfilling

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. It was an interesting plot, but it was not developed enough and the characters were flat.

Would you be willing to try another book from Murray McDonald? Why or why not?

Maybe, if he were to work on developing the story more.

How could the performance have been better?

I did not like the narrator. There did not seam to be enough change in his voice from one character to the other. There were times I was not sure who was speaking.

Good but a little out there

The story line for this book is really far fetched but the action is good and I liked the characters, especially Cash and Rigs. I did find the story line at times a little unsettling.

READ THIS! Vulgarity Stifled the Content...

NO SPOILER. I am not opposed to vulgar expletives when called for (i.e. war novels, sparse use for effect, etc.), but I just can't enjoy the story and plot when vulgarity saturates every conversation of the characters in the book. It really ruins the enjoyment of listening. To me, it feels as if authors use overwhelming vulgarity to be relevant. Note to authors: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE VULGAR TO BE RELEVANT! It feels really immature and sophomoric. I made it through chapter 9, but it was not easy. I would not spend a credit on this one because of that. The narration wasn't bad for what he had to work with. I was listening comfortably at 1.5X speed. If any of this review helped you, please click YES below. Later.

Arduous

Would you try another book from Murray McDonald and/or Adam Verner?

I don't know. I don't think the story is awful, but the characters and action sure are one-dimensional. I stopped listening 1/4 of the way through.

How To Ruin a Good Plot

Would you try another book from Murray McDonald and/or Adam Verner?

Probably not.

What was most disappointing about Murray McDonald’s story?

The writing. It's ... poor. How poor? At one point, he even uses the phrase "one of the more unique places..." Hunh? A professional writer using "more unique"? DIdn't we get that drilled out in high school? Apart from that, it's cliche-ridden. For example, all the women are "beautiful and dangerous". But the bad ones are "dark" and the good ones have sunny dispositions. The worst part is that there are simply no descriptions that bring the world to life. A day is sunny - that's it. Are there clouds? How warm is it? Is there a breeze? None of these details are, apparently, relevant. But, as we all know, those are the things that allow us to see the location in our mind's eye. They're important.

What didn’t you like about Adam Verner’s performance?

I don't think anyone could bring this stilted prose to life, but the voices just aren't believable.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The plot - the basis for the story offered a real opportunity. Too bad about the execution.

Any additional comments?

I am finishing the book, because I want to know how the plot lines end. But this is the first time in a long time that one of my audible books has gone days without me bothering to pick it up.
