DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but she has more tolerance for her hippy neighbours than most. When one of them goes missing, she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It's an easy job to track the young woman down to a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work through their novels. It gets complicated when a body is discovered and Vera's neighbour is found with a knife in her hand.
Calling in the team, Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else, but the investigation is too tempting. Then another body is found, and Vera suspects that someone is playing games with her.

I love the series Vera so I bought this book and I wasn't disappointed. You really get in to the characters and places. I love the narrator Charlie Hardwicks voice and it's great that she is a geordie as after watching Vera it wouldn't sound right in any other accent.
Charlie Hardwick is perfect narrator for this fantastic story involving D.C.I Vera Stanhope.
Clever dialogue, atmospheric and perfect pace makes this audiobook my all time favourite.
If you like the TV series you will love this.
I'd not read a Vera Stanhope book, just seen the television series with the brilliant Brenda Blethyn, so wasn't sure what to expect. It was excellent.
A real old fashioned whodunit (that I guessed completely wrong) with strong characters and superb narration. You could, at times, almost smell the sea off the Northumberland coast.
I'll definitely be looking for more, and I hope they all have the same narrator.
"Dull potboiler; boring reader"
It's hard to tell if this is an average story made worse by a boring reader or actually really poor in its own right. Reading this myself might be ok, but the poor narrator of this audiobook makes it dull, a shame, since the ingredients are so hopeful.
The story is barely believable, and the characters unsympathetic, even Vera is not drawn too well here. This felt like a book written to a deadline by an author out of ideas.
The reader may be from the north east, but she only has about 3 different voices, which makes some of the scenes impossible to follow, where a room full of people discuss the case. Her reading voice is also is a bit of a drone, which was just boring in the end.
Basically I was disappointed. I don't really understand all the five star reviews, it isn't exciting, well read or believable IMHO. I guess I expect a bit more for a fifer!
"keeps you guessing and is very well read"
this is my second vera Stanhope mystery and I have just ordered my third because the stories are well crafted and certainly keep you guessing. the characters were well developed and it was beautifully read by Charlie Hardwick
"Another great story narrated by Charlie Hardwick."
I have read the books; listened to them and watched the series.
my conclusion, lived listening to Charlie's genuine "Geordie' accent - she made the story zing and come alive!
"Involvment makes the detective investigating real"
The interaction between the detective and her neighbours and the differences there are between them make this a fascinating exploration of how we are challenged by those who do not think like us and overcome our prejudices. We are in there with Vera and her battles to find the solution
I have not seen the TV programmes based on Vera. I enjoyed this book but with all writing nowadays it is over drawn out to make more pages. I prefer books that get to the point quicker.
This is the second Ann Cleeves I have read and will read more of her works
"Fantastic and authentic"
I am a real fan of Ann's books, and it's great to listen to them as well. Using a narrator capable of doing Vera's accent justice really added to my enjoyment. My only criticism. is that I like to listen to whole series, starting at the beginning....
"A good read"
The narrator is excellent
Vera, because she's not good but not perfect
No, but it was a good and interesting read
Not my favourite Anne Cleeves book, but enjoyable, and the narrator was excellent
