"Crime fiction has seldom needed to salute and mourn such a stellar talent as Larsson's in the same breath....A gripping crime debut that lives up to the hype." (Sunday Times)
"An utterly fresh political and journalistic thriller that is also intimate and moral. In spite of its dark unearthings Stieg Larsson has written a feast of a book, with central characters you will not forget." (Michael Ondaatje)
"A REALLY meaty Nordic thriller." (Daily Mail)
I bought this audiobook because I like to read and listen at the same time. It was an unpleasant surprise when I realized the audiobook is a shortened version of the actual book, so I find it useless. Too bad.
The suffering when Elizabeth got raped.
Very good, firm
How Elizabeth turned out to fix things for her.
I HAVE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT THIS BOOK BEFORE I PURCHASED IT THAT I HAD QUIET HIGH EXPECTATIONS. ON THE WHOLE THOSE EXPECTATIONS WERE MET. I LOVE HOW DISFUNCTIONAL AND GRITTY THE MAIN CHARACTER WAS. THE NAMES WERE A LITTLE HARD TO GET USED TO AND SOME WERE QUIET SIMILIAR WHICH SOMETIMES TOOK A WHILE TO REALISE WHICH CHARACTER WAS WHICH, BUT I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.
I had never read any Larsson's, and was intrigued by this reading. In the beginning, the fact that it's audible makes it hard to follow the various characters, but at an early point it becomes very clear.
I will be downloading the sequels. Good work!
The narrator was very adept in changing his voice and giving the characters life, this was my first try at an audio book and I was hooked!! I devoured the next 2 books in the series.- the books always left you on a
the plot was riveting, some parts were dark but essential to the development of the character
Martin wenner is a great narrator. looking forward to more books narrated by him.
I finished this in 2 days... in between car rides, while in bed... actually didn't want to sleep just so I could keep on going. DEFINITELY a MUST listen
It ranks pretty high. Suspenseful and great characters overall.
Possibly on Da Vinci Code on how one finds one surprises in every turn.
I am a first time listener of Martin.
No. Very intense book though.
The suspense through out the book
Only the rest of the series compare with this book
His pronunciation and accent holds you in the milieu
I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series
I have the girl with the dragon tattoo in spanish and I purchased the English version in audio-book to practice English, but it is a very clipped version and they don't tell it when they sell it.
I live in France where everyone seems to be reading Stieg Larsson's Trilogy on the metro, so I jumped at the chance of listening to this book (the first in the series) in English - and I can now understand why everyone is so excited about this work!
The two 'heros'of the story, journalist Mickael Blomkvist and very quirky private investigator Lisbeth Salander are brought together to solve a murder where the body has never been found. In order to do so, they delve into the closed world of a remote Swedish island, where the majority of the inhabitants are members of the privileged industrialit Vanger family...
The author has managed to give the characters depth with few brushstrokes, build suspense and convey the atmosphere of a remote nordic village. This is very largely brought to life by Martin Wenner's excellent reading.
As an avid listener/reader of crime novels, it is a pleasure to hear one written and set in Sweden. It is not often that Scandinavian crime authors get translated into English - a great shame if 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is anything to go by. When can we expect Stieg Larsson's next two books in the series on Audible? Please make it VERY SOON.
"brilliant suspense and intrigue"
I just loved every single minute of the listen. It was one of the best audiobooks ever. The pace was just right and the characters were fasinating.
I have listened to 100s of audiobooks and this is in my top 3,and maybe my number one.I will not talk about the plot as you will have to listen so you to, can enjoy the brilliant story.
I want to know if this is a trilogy, where are the other 2 books as I was very keen to hear them and when I looked they were nowhere to be seen!!Please audible bring them on.
"Millennium part 1"
This is the first part of what I hope will be an excellent triology. Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who is found guilty of slander, is persuaded to take on a job for Henrik Vanger a powerful industrialist. His cover is to write the story of the company, but more importantly Vanger wants him to find out who killed his granddaughter who disappeared 40 years previously. It is a cold trail set in a cold Swedish winter.
Investigating the rich and powerful members of this large and rather poisonous family brings trouble as well as a smart surveillance agent, Lisbeth Salander, into Blomkvist's investigation.
An interesting, well-told and well-read story with its nail- biting moments, makes this author an excellent discovery. Not to be missed in its own right, this book sets a high standard for the rest of the trilogy, whenever the other books are publish.
"Gripping stuff - a well narrated audiobook."
My wife and I listened to this over the course of a week or two in the evenngs. We both really enjoyed it and I was so gripped by the story, I stayed up nearly all of one night to hear the ending. My wife then had to catch up during the day whilst I then suffered from lack of sleep!
I picked up this abridged version in error, as I prefer unabridged versions of books - I don't like to feel that I'm missing something the author felt was important enough to include. Having said that, I didn't realise until I went back online to download the next in the series, which shows they've done a good job. On reflection, it was quite pacey, which wasn't a bad thing.
The narrator was excellent and immersed us both in the world of the book. He was unintrusive and handled the characterisations very well indeed.
The story has some quite disturbing violent and sexual scenes, they are integral to the story and not gratuitous, but if you're easily offended it might not be suitable. Such scenes didn't offend us, but it did make us think 'wierd!'.
Well worth the Audible credit. I've downloaded both of the next books in the series, this time unabridged, and I think the same narrator.
I was not sure I would enjoy this book but am so glad I purchased it. The book and the narrator were superb. I felt intrigued by all the characters and any interruptions like work, eating or sleeping were very annoying! I also felt that any other downloaded books might be disappointing after listening to this. I have downloaded the second in the trilogy and cannot wait.
"Surprised and Hooked"
I returned to the option of buying this title a few times but after doing so, I was delighted with the purchase. This is so well constructed and presented. The plot isn't complex but intriguing enough to keep you interested from start to finish. Larssen is a very talented writer, and with the narration from Martin Wenner, I had no hessitation in purchasing Book 2. Excellent all round.beta inappVoteInfo
"Excellent story, explores daring themes"
Larsson's dark crime drama explores a mystery decades old with an excellently crafted cast of characters. The story explores difficult themes, including torture, rape, and murder, but the development of the characters through these experiences is written astoundingly. The mystery exists not only in the case, but within the protagonists as well. An engaging audiobook, and is narrated well.
"Superb, Gripping and an absolute MUST"
As the first in the trilogy, this is , without doubt, one of the BEST buys on Audible. I got it after my wife started the Kindle book, and could not stop listening. We put it on the ipod and sat for hours, just soaking up all the twists and turns. A truly masterful set of tales. I bought all three, and wish that there were more. SUPERB
"Dragon Tattoo_Love it/Hate it ??"
When I first started to listen this this Audio book I was not sure if I would like it or hate it, I had started to read the book some time ago but stopped due time and work.
I purchased the audio book for something different to listen to on a long haul flight and was soon enthralled in the book and the twists and turns it takes. I found two central characters, Lisbeth and Mikail, with their totally different attitudes and morals most unusual, Mikail with his search for the truth behind the story and in depth reporting and Lisbeth with her slanted look on lift due to her upbringing. There are hints at a long buried secret waiting to topple the whole shooting match at any time, but despite this the story weaves and twists its way along at a fair pace.
In the end I decided that I loved it and bought the second book almost immediately I finished the first, only to the drawn deeper into the murky world of the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Brilliant, fresh, different and compelling
The hype around this book is slightly confusing, considering that ultimately it is, at least for me, just another crime thriller that I'd probably not read again.
However, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is interesting. You might need some time to get used to the slightly confusing names of people and places. However, the plot is tight (at least in the abridged version), and moves quickly, sometimes predictably, but often not. The narrator is excellent, and listening to the story at 1 in the night can creep you out enough to stay awake and see the story to its conclusion.
It is evident that the author has a very strong sense of right and wrong, which comes through the actions of his lead characters. Blomkvist - he seems to be the uncomplicated one, a journalist seeking to do what is right and who seems to appear attractive to pretty much any female around who is breathing. Salander, now she is the intriguing one, we keep discovering more about her throughout the book, and I have a feeling this is going to continue through the other two books as well.
Worth a listen :)
