It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance...and about Lisbeth Salander, a 24-year-old pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age who assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism and an unexpected connection between themselves.
Contagiously exciting, it's about society at its most hidden, and about the intimate lives of a brilliantly realized cast of characters, all of them forced to face the darker aspects of their world and of their own lives.

The story itself was entertaining, but I feel I have to mention something about the narrator. After having listened to The Girl Who Played with Fire and comparing that narrator with Martin Wenner, I really wish Martin had done the voices for the other Larson books as well. In the other audio, the narrator made the protagonist sound so sleepy and dull it was a bit frustrating to put up with. I'm also glad that Wenner didn't go over the top to try to sound like a woman for the female voices.
I think I liked this more as a movie. I loved the movie rendition. It feels a bit slow for an audio book. Maybe for an audio book this would be better in the abridged edition.
Lots of characters to keep you properly thinking. An absolutely superb reader who makes lots of characters come alive. Highly adventurous.
worst part of this listen is you don't want to turn it off!!! Really great story with great characters. Doesn't get better than this.
The story line good and there is some strong character building. However, there is strong language and rape scenes that are very explicit that detracted from the story for me.
I had a tough time getting into this story, and was thankful I got the abridged vs. the unabridged. The explicit sex scenes didn't add any value to the story, but rather detracted from it in my opinion. I probably won't be picking up another book by this author.
I must be in the minority because these are all the rage in movies and what not. To me the story line is contrived (see how many twists and turns I can put in to fool you!) and hard to follow well. I listened to the whole thing but I wouldn't buy any sequels.
