Publisher's summary

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The thrilling first book in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series featuring Lisbeth Salander: “Combine the chilly Swedish backdrop and moody psychodrama of a Bergman movie with the grisly pyrotechnics of a serial-killer thriller, then add an angry punk heroine and a down-on-his-luck investigative journalist, and you have the ingredients of Stieg Larsson’s first novel” (The New York Times). • Also known as the Millennium series

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

Caution: Very Sexually Graphic

I was surprised that none of the reviewers pointed out that this book contains very graphic depictions of rape and sexual torture. What made it all the more incredible is that we're dragged through these disgusting scenes for no apparent reason. The passages neither further the plot or factor into the overall story in any way. It seems as though they're just tossed in to give the story more of a thriller's "edge". Stay away unless you have a strong stomach for kinky rape etc. After reading this one I look forward to a rating system for books similar to movies and video games.

Wishing I got the "unabridged" version

Martin Wenner did a marvelous job narrating. I believe equal or better than Simon Vance, (whom I heard on "Played with Fire". I also watched the movie and was sorry to see it rushed the ending. After listening to the "unabridged version" of "Played with Fire" I wished I purchased the "unabridged" version of "Dragon Tatto". I would agree with some of the comments that it starts off slow. As far as characters are concerned....there are far fewer in this book than the second book. I read them both in order and watched the movie in between the two.

BUYER BEWARE

This is the ABRIDGED version. It's about HALF the length of the unabridged version. My wife recommended that I read the book, so I got it. The story is good, but it definitely felt rushed. It wasn't until I started the second book that I realized that it was different from the first.

The problem is that the book covers look identical, so it's VERY difficult to tell the difference. If you are looking for the Cliff's Notes version, this is it. If you want to get the real experience, DO NOT buy it

I forced myself to listen to the end

I had a tough time getting into this story, and was thankful I got the abridged vs. the unabridged. The explicit sex scenes didn't add any value to the story, but rather detracted from it in my opinion. I probably won't be picking up another book by this author.

Confusing

I felt that there were far too many characters to keep straight. I also got confused remembering which Swedish name went with who

Slow start, worth the wait

This is a mystery about twisted human beings, whose secrets are uncovered and avenged by other twisted human beings. However, you would never guess it was a mystery about people judging by the first 100 or so pages. A large chunk of the beginning of the book has to do with a financial scandal. Get past that and you'll meet some really interesting characters. While the ending ties back to the financial scandal, it's not enough of a connection to justify so much time and detail up front.

Eh...

The writing is good. Descriptive and great character development.....but slow. I got half way through and lost interest.

Pretty Good story, mature content

The story line good and there is some strong character building. However, there is strong language and rape scenes that are very explicit that detracted from the story for me.

Was too short

This plot was so well devised that I wish i had bought the unabridged version. Many said the long version was slow in the beginning, but I really did not want the abridged version to end; 8 hours was not near enough!
