Critic reviews

ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME

"Cases rarely come much colder than the decades-old disappearance of teen heiress Harriet Vanger from her family's remote island retreat north of Stockholm, nor do fiction debuts hotter than this European best seller...At once a strikingly original thriller and a vivisection of Sweden's dirty not-so-little secrets, this first of a trilogy introduces a provocatively odd couple." (Publishers Weekly)

"Combine the chilly Swedish backdrop and moody psychodrama of a Bergman movie with the grisly pyrotechnics of a serial-killer thriller, then add an angry punk heroine and a down-on-his-luck investigative journalist, and you have the ingredients of Stieg Larsson's first novel." (The New York Times)

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a striking novel. Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything new on the horizon, along comes Stieg Larsson with this wonderfully unique story. I was completely absorbed." (Michael Connelly)

Very Entertaining

I found this book a little slow moving at first, but after a bit the story became more intriguing as it began to take shape. Very enjoyable ... now, onto the next

Outstanding!

This was an excellent story with mystery, twists, turns, revelations and intrigue. Very well written but names get a little confusing at certain points.

Mixed feelings

The first half, maybe more, was tough to get through. A lot of information and not much story line. Once the story actually got momentum, it was wonderful and intriguing. Had to speed it up to 1.5x just to get through the beginning. The speaker speaks extremely slow, but his differentiation between characters was incredible.

One of the best on Audible

After listening to app. 35-40 books, this rates as one of the best. Love the narrator. Tremendous action and kept me guessing from beginning to end. I cannot wait to listen to the balance of the trilogy.

Great Novel

What made the experience of listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo the most enjoyable?

The intense of the drama while searching for clues on Harriet`s dissappearance and Mysterious popping up

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes because of the hidden clues and the way certain character`s would go about keeping secrets

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my experience and I say it is very well narrated

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction but it does make one kind of sad that so many women are being murdered for no real purpose whatsoever

Love this reader; story good for its ilk

Nice juxtaposition of the two protagonists. Nice feminist viewpoint. For this type of book, this is one of the best. I am OVER torture and graphic violence scenes in books -- fast-forwarded past those parts. Very interesting to read a book set in a culture very similar to USA, yet just different enough to add interest. Interesting, intricate plotting which was clear enough for me to follow without problems. And it didn't switch from one viewpoint to another every two pages the way a lot of thrillers seem to feel they have to. Larsson managed to drive the plot forward beautifully without overusing this device.
Simon Vance is a fabulous, pitch-perfect reader.
