Publisher's summary

Audie Awards Winner, 2010

The stunning third and final novel in Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling trilogy.

Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own, she will plot revenge—against the man who tried to kill her, and the corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.

Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.

Critic reviews

“Larsson’s vivid characters, the depth of detail across three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of the genre.” (The Economist)

“The literary equivalent of a caffeine rush. . . . Larsson was one of those rare writers who could keep you up until 3 a.m. and then make you want to rush home the next night to do it again.” (Newsweek)

“Salander is someone you will never forget. . . . Anyone who enjoys grounding their imaginations in hundreds . . . of exciting pages about the way we live now ought to take advantage of this trilogy.” (Chicago Tribune)

Great book for listening.

I enjoyed this book like the others by Larson. I wish he was still here to tell us what happens next to Lizabeth.

The Perfect Conclusion

If you could sum up The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest in three words, what would they be?

Tense, moving, resolved.

What other book might you compare The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest to and why?

This is a book which boils down to a trial, but the way the trial is held is unlike any other depiction I've encountered. It's tense, and extraordinarily well orchestrated. Stieg Larsson ties up all his loose ends so well. Even though he planned to write more novels with these characters before his untimely death, this book provides the perfect conclusion to his accidental trilogy, and if there are to be no more stories with these characters, we have left them in a good place.

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Vance is, as always, fantastic. His voice is clear and his characters distinct. Seeing his name attached always makes me more inclined to purchase the audiobook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Even though there were a couple of slow parts around the 1/3 mark, the characters were still engaging enough to warrant my full attention.

Any additional comments?

Larsson was a phenomenal talent, and he will continue to be sorely missed. His three novels stand as examples for how to tell this kind of story well. Bravo.

Best Trilogy ever

Start with this one, you won't want to stop. I think all three books are fantastic, and that the third is the best of all.

Awesome

Steig Larsson is a genius. Thoughtful, unforced and amazing. Completely satisfying. Simon Vance is one of the easiest voices to listen to, and brought life to the story.

Great End to a Fantastic Series

What did you love best about The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest?

The character development and flow of the story was completely engrossing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That is a very difficult question to answer. It really did change from book to book in the series. In this particular installment I think it was Lisbeth Salander. The continued development of the character through the series has been very interesting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me think a lot about how, when secrets are involved, even things that start out as well meaning can end up corrupt and evil.

Any additional comments?

Loved the series from start to finish.

The weakest of the 3

I loved the first 2 books, i read them in about 2 weeks, then i waited a long time to read the last one. When i did it was nice to come back to such great characters, as Lisbeth and Mikael are, but the story is not shocking or as intense as the other books, it takes a long time to talk about new characters that are not so interesting.

I hope the next one is great.
