Publisher's summary

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London.

Now, 10 years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, which had been the family home of his ex-wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan, who has also returned to Long Island.

But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer - Susan Sutter.

At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces, old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal.

In The Gate House, a book that is both a sequel to The Gold Coast as well as a suspenseful stand-alone novel, acclaimed author Nelson DeMille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore - a place where past, present, and future collide with often unexpected results.

Good Sequel

As with "Gold Coast", the sequel is at times FAR too wordy when it really doesn't need to be.

Approximatly 50% of the first 5 hours is basically a retelling of Gold Coast!

However, the funny, witty, and sarcastic humor is again brilliant!

By no means is this a "Classic Timepiece" as the author self-proclaims, but it is entertaining and worth the listen!!

The narrator is one of the best I have heard!

Overall, recommended!

Ok, but not his best.

felt like a lot of filler and general stuff that didn't really need to be there. Actually got boring at times. maybe an abridged version would have been better.

Get the abridged version.

This book is a disappointment. It has too much dialog where the primary character talks to himself. About half of the book could have been left out.

Can't get enough!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am so addicted to this kind of book now, I am in pursuit to find another. Perfect narration, perfect story. I love at the end when the author talks about how he did it. Just excellent!

What did you like best about this story?

What I liked best about this story was that it was so realistic. It was well-read and just flowed. I was so addicted I got a migraine headache from having my headsets on for so many hours in a row. I could not stop listening!

Nice continuation of The Gold Coast

Because of the repeated looks back and rehashing of past events, you could get by without reading The Gold Coast before this book. But The Gold Coast was fun to listen to in its own right so I enjoyed spending twice the amount of time in this world.

The Gold Coast gave you much more of a dive into the world of old money and character development of the main characters.

By contrast, this book is more of a continuation/addendum to the first rather than a deep dive into “the world” of the first book.

If you liked TGC, you’ll enjoy spending some more time with the characters (and the narrator who executed the book perfectly).

Awesome

As good as first - surprised it isn’t more popular - narration was great too - well worth it

great sequel

The reader really connects with the two lead characters.
Looked forward to my commute so I could listen to the story. Sometimes I would sit in the garage and continue to listen once I was home!

Another great novel

The narrator brought this book to life; he is a great storyteller. The characters were likeable and complex. The author did a great job connecting the two books and bringing them together after ten years without being redundant.

Great Sequal

This one has it all...hate, revenge, love, forgiveness. Sometimes sequals just do not live up to the original story but this one will not disappoint. If you have read 'Gold Coast' then invest the time to finish the story you wont regret it. I was not familiar with this narrator but he does a good read and I will be looking for more by him.
