Publisher's summary

Rina Lazarus and her husband, LAPD Homicide Lieutenant Peter Decker, are shocked by an outrage that cuts close to the spiritual heart of their family. Rina's small storefront synagogue has been desecrated with anti-Semitic graffiti and grisly Nazi death camp photographs. The alleged perpetrator is 17-year-old Ernesto Golding, a "rich kid" obsessed with haunting suspicions about the origins of his Polish paternal grandfather.

Then Ernesto is found brutally murdered, along with his therapist, Dr. Mervin Baldwin, at an exclusive nature camp that caters to moneyed, troubled children. For Decker and his wife, unraveling the truth behind Ernesto's violent death becomes more terrifying with each sinister twist. For lethal secrets with roots in the horrors of a past genteration are coming to the surface, propelling Peter and Rina into a ghastly world of ruthless parents and damaged youth - and toward a dark evil and its ultimate retribution.

Good Overall

What did you love best about The Forgotten?

Almost the entire book. I was a little disappointed with a part of the ending even though the ending was good. I won't say which part.

Any additional comments?

I do recommend this book. The auther is one of my favorites.

a return to normal

After the last book I wondered if perhaps this series had run its course. Luckily I gave it one more chance and I am glad that I did because The Forgotten is a return to what I love most about the series: an exploration of the characters and their unique and interesting lives. Rina is front and center where she belongs. Peter is the hard-working and intelligent cop I love. The mystery is there too, but more importantly, the characters I love are there.

Don't Start Here!

I love the “Decker Lazarus” Books and so by default I will have a positive review.

Like with any series, you might come across some “bad apples” but because you like the books overall, one bad pick doesn’t impact your overall opinion… unless of course you get 2 or 3 bad ones in a row!

This “free pass” on behalf of fans could backfire on someone who doesn’t know anything about the series and reads the books out of sequence. In my view this was the case with book 13, I thought it was under par and might even turn some people off.

My top gripes with this instalment were:

•I had trouble linking all the crimes together, it didn’t feel cohesive. In addition, the motives completely escaped me - I could not make ANY sense of Ernesto’s urges to trash the synagogue.

•Jacob’s storyline does not ring true at all! He comes across as a super-kid, more generous and polite than any other kid I know, and yet we have to believe he is a heaving mass of angst and boiling anger?

•I felt that the multiple references to sexual depravity were there just to be salacious and added nothing to the story

•My biggest issue is keeping track of many characters and in this book everyone seemed to have 3 names! I was confused a lot of the time.

Still, overall, this is one of my favourite series and so I have no hesitation about jumping into Book 14!

Another Decker/Lazarus winner.

I enjoyed the storyline that included the relationship between Decker and teenage Jacob. Additionally, how it weaved a tale that connected characters with the holocaust and historical family secrets.

Another Winner

All of the outstanding Decker/Lazarus features are present: great characters, a complex plot, excitement. Rina’s compassion is especially heartwarming. Jacob is fascinating in this book. I give my usual kudos to Mitch Greenberg for the narration.

Good but predictable for the most part.

The book was good but I more enjoy a book that keeps me questing, this wasn't that type of book for me. Did have a good story though.

Great Series

Would you consider the audio edition of The Forgotten to be better than the print version?

I prefer the audio since my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be and I can listen while I work. that's a big PLUS for me. This is a good series.
