Publisher's summary

In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, after taking on a foreclosure case, defense attorney Mickey Haller fights to prove his client’s innocence—but first he must follow a trail of black market evidence to its sinister end

Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home.

Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too—and he's certain he's on the right trail.

Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in. Connelly proves again why he "may very well be the best novelist working in the United States today" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Classic Connelly

I really appreciated this story as it was a fast and entertaining read. The Lincoln Lawyer is a cool cat.

Enjoyable overall

Would you listen to The Fifth Witness again? Why?

I might listen again because I think most of the characters are interesting, but I'd probably read it rather than spend more time with this narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Cisco and Bullocks.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Listening to this narrator, you notice his clear voice, but he has an inflection the seems almost like a teenager or a surfer from my old high schools. It's difficult to describe but it was distracting for me and I will probably read the next book in the series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending was well done although I thought it was predictable.

Any additional comments?

The basic story line was good, but there seemed to be a lot of repetitive events.

Will Make You Want to Read it Again

This is the best MH work since The Lincoln Lawyer. It is complex.

Using real events in the legal and economic arena and then crafting a good thriller based on that but that you don't know who is on what side keeps you listening. I couldn't stop--even taking it on vacation and listening for hours at a time.

This genre is not my usual but I like the MH series and The Fifth Witness redeems the series after the letdown of the Brass Verdict and The Reversal that were a bit empty and flat when they finished.

There is one thread never followed up in this story that I found important still and like I wrote, another read or listen won't be boring considering all the players and timeline.

LOVED this book!!

I believe I have read everything Michael Connelly has written and I am delighted with this character. I didn't think you could do better than Harry Bosch, but Mickey Haller is great. This book will make a really good movie and I can't wait to read the next book.

Courtroom Drama

This book was surprisingly good. I was kind of amazed on how I got into the courtroom drama so quickly and the story kept my interest all the way till the end. I never read anything from Michael Connelly before. I liked how he incorporated our current economical status at people loosing their homes due to foreclosure and the courtroom process of the main character being accused for murder. After finishing this book, it makes me want to read more of his other titles.

Best Haller novel yet!

When I first listened to the Lincoln Lawyer I was fairly ho-hum on the Mickey Haller character. Connelly has improved these stories with each edition and "The Fifth Witness" is his best Haller novel yet. While still not as engrossing as the Bosch series, this novel was a definite "page turner" that kept you guessing. More so than most of his other books in this series, this entry goes more in-depth into the actual trial process, something that I found interesting. While I would like to hear a better narrator, this preference did not detract from my enjoyment of this book.

Very satisfying

Having loved these characters for years, and trying to read all of his books in order, I so appreciate the character development, new and old characters, and masterful plotting that mark any Michael Connelly book. This is an especially satisfying example.
