Publisher's summary

From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, there have been more than two dozen assassination attempts on the president of the United States. Four have been successful. But now, Beecher White - the hero of the number one New York Times best seller The Inner Circle - discovers a killer in Washington, D.C., who's meticulously re-creating the crimes of these four men. Historians have branded them as four lone wolves. But what if they were wrong?

Beecher is about to discover the truth: that during the course of a hundred years, all four assassins were secretly working together. What was their purpose? For whom do they really work? And why are they planning to kill the current president? Beecher's about to find out. And most terrifyingly, he's about to come face-to-face with the fifth assassin.

Great book... Again

I really enjoy these books. Usually, I go through them in a matter of days only because I force myself to stop listening so that I don't have to wait long for my next set of credits... Lol. Great book. Loved it

not the best meltzer

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I think Meltzer is stretching the reach of the culper ring. it has lost some of the mystery and excitement

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

move on to another topic

Could you see The Fifth Assassin being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, I hope not

Any additional comments?

I didn't really like this story...I had to force myself to finish it, and admit to blanking out several times..it didn't keep my interest

Stops in the middle of a story

Relatively OK but stops in the middle of a story. Nothing really unique in the story.

A big Meltzer fan, and this is good, but weak

I eagerly await each of Brad Meltzer's books, which seem to have gotten sidetracked by his "hero" books for his son and daughter, and his TV series. I missed his Washington DC thriller roots. With his previous book, I finally felt he had returned. There was the DC intrigue, only in the hands of a young male archivist and his wizened mentor.

When I first began listening to this (Scott Brick was excellent, as usual), I worried I had ordered the past book instead, as it all sounded so familiar with the same places and characters. It was, I discovered, an extension of the previous plot line; but with the soap opera gimmick where someone killed had really escaped death and was alive and well in this novel.

Although new conspiracy theories were unearthed and well-written, i felt it could have been better. He really needs to go back to his earlier government thriller days, and dig in, with new characters and a new plot.

Still good, still worthwhile. Just not as good as I expected. Too much on his plate?

A fantastic adventure filled with American history

im always blown away by how much research this author does in order to write such amazing books. they are all well written by an author that is clearly dedicated and passionate for keeping you in an adventurous story filled with as much American history and fun facts as possible. I walk away curious about our history and find myself looking into things beyond the book... it's fantastic to end up finding a number of "new to me" fact's I would have never had the opportunity to know. I highly recommend this series and this reader.
