    "Gabriel's story takes huge strides"

Gabriel Allon is finally aging, and finally realizing his human limitations. This story moves him around the board, and promises to change his career and family life. It is a great deal to accomplish in one book. The shows, as usual, an unwilling Gabriel called into action. But somehow he appears more human in this. By teaming up with former enemies who showed themselves to be as good as he was, he improves what the author tantalizingly alludes to as perhaps his last "secret" assassination assignment. All of Silva's books are excellent. It is interesting that he is allowing his protagonist to age and perhaps mellow. It will be interesting to see how far he carries that drift in subsequent books.

"Gabriel Allon + George Guidall= excellence"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would totally recommend this book to a friend that enjoys international thrillers. Daniel Silva does not disappoint and neither does George Guidall in his performance. All of the characters, even though I have heard about them before in other Allon books, come to life in audio version. A very excellent entry.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the fact that it was not another painting based story. Art and artist played a part but Gabriel being a restorer was not the central element. Great change of pace.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

I like everything about George Guidall. I often look for books he read/performs to pick my next audio book. I listen to at least 3+ a month and the performance of the reader is key to my enjoyment after content of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Nope.

    Any additional comments?

Read it and you will not be sad- it is not a weak entry by Daniel Silva. In fact it might be one of his better entries.

    "Very "dry"!"

Mr Guidall was very good but there were long periods of dialog where it started with no point and ended with no point. I got very tired of the very long dialog that seemed pointless and endless. It took away from the story. It got to a point where I didn't care what happened to the English Girl!

"Best Gabriel Allon novel for me so far"

Well-paced, understandable (if you read/listen to spy novels, you'll know they can easily become convoluted) plot, and believable characters. Allon was his intense but in-control self, Chiara a bit more involved in this one. A few new characters were introduced, and I hope to see them again in future books. Interesting and for the most part, unpredictable. As usual, George Guidall's narration was perfect. He can read his grocery list to me and I'd probably be riveted.

    "Another Superior Installment"
Would you listen to The English Girl again? Why?

Of course - I'm addicted to the Gabriel Allon series.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes - you're so involved with the characters you've come to know through the years that you worry for their welfare and the mission.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

    Always Gabriel

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The Maze

Knowledge is knowing the way. Wisdom is looking for an alternative, more interesting road to get there. Audiobooks are that road.

"13 not a lucky number for Silva"

I read almost every Silva book and this one was weak in plot, characters and suspense. George Guidall did a fine job with the narration as usual, but this one fizzled and died for me.

The plot revolves around a kidnapped woman and what happens to her and why. The "what" is predictable and the "why" is lame.

Not even a good filler book.

"For Gabriel Allon Fans - Need former Narrators"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, I enjoy the whole Gabriel Allon series, although they're all pretty much the same. Gabriel is dragged into a situation after "retiring" with his wife, chaos rules, he gets permission to assemble the same crack team, it gets dicey at the end, but all comes out okay after some very rough going. I like it, but ya gotta put up with the VERY pro-Israeli, focus. An idealistic and wish list approach with a Pope and President on Gabriel's side (oh, wish it could be true!), and the ever present dangers of either Islamist extremists taking over "civilized" life with sharia law or else it's the evil Russians reverting to Cold War totalitarianism. All the while the rest of the world is all against Israel despite all the good they do to save us from the extremists.

If you're a Gabriel Allon aficionado, you'll surely like the book. I'm one and I did!

What other book might you compare The English Girl to and why?

Most any of the more recent Silva novels

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The real negative of the past two novels have been the narrator, George Guidall. A decent narrator of other novels, his voice and style are totally inappropriate for the Gabriel Allon series. It requires the deep resonance of a European voice from John Lee, Phil Gigante or even Simon Vance (who sometimes made the Israeli accent sounds like Romanian Vampires). For Guidall, the voice is too shrill and he made mincemeat of one of a returning character from the past. I couldn't tell the difference between Gabriel and Shamron. His style just doesn't go with these characters and Silva's style. Bring back the English actors!

Was The English Girl worth the listening time?

    yes

Would you try another book from Daniel Silva and/or George Guidall?

This seems to me that it would be better reading than listening

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    I didn't finish it

    "Fairly interesting story....."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, I would have chosen a different narrator, with a British accent who was able to better impersonate the different accents (mostly Israeli, French and Russians)

Who was your favorite character and why?

The development of the characters was inadequate to like or dislike anyone. The narrator tone made it all rather boring.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice was tired, his intonation off, he was not able to replicate the accents and made a poor attempt at even trying.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    no

    "Another excellent Gabirel Allon story"

I am a big fan of Daniel Silva's books. They are a little more quirky than the average spy novel. The main character is not some all-action hero like Mitch Rapp in the Vince Flynn books (although I am a great fan of these stories too). He is a more complex, rounded character but with his own personal demons.

The story itself is plausible, although some may think it a little far-fetched. I won't reveal any spoilers, but will say that it is a gripping plot with a number of unexpected twists to it.

The narration is good and up to the usual standards of George Guidell, who remains one of my top narrators.

    Highly recommended.
