Publisher's summary

A warning from a stranger.

"Nothing you know is real. Your name isn't Shawn Jaffe, you're not an investment broker, and you're not from Ohio." But the stranger is murdered before he can explain. Now Shawn isn't sure who he can trust. Even his own memories are suspect. Someone is watching him, controlling him, using him. To survive, he'll need to find out who and why. But the stakes are much higher than one man. Our humanity is on the line, and on the eighth day, it could be the beginning of the end.

For fans of Jason Bourne and Total Recall comes an action-packed scifi thriller that takes off on the first page and keeps rolling until the last page turns.

Joseph John leaves his readers gasping in shock

Shawn Jaffe is your easy go lucky guy with a degree from Ohio University, a rising star in the investment world who just relocated to New York.  Heading to work one day, Jaffe encounters a man who tells him, “Nothing you know is real. Your name isn't Shawn Jaffe, you're not an investment broker, and you're not from Ohio."

Before Jaffe can ask the man what he means, he is brutally murdered in front of Jaffe.  Detective Harrison is called in to solve the murder.  Before he can figure anything out, Jaffe reads the classified and heads over to Madison Square Garden where the presidential candidates are speaking.  Now Sam has three murders to figure out – the mysterious man, the presidential candidate and Shawn Jaffe.

The next part of the book is filled with major twists and turns, murder, conspiracies and more!  The author, Joseph John leaves his readers gasping in shock as the true story unfolds.  This is one of those books that will leave you looking over you shoulder and questioning coincidences and feelings of Déjà vu!

John understands conspiracy theorists and theories clearly taking advantage of this skill and creating a story around an all-to-realistic world. Makes one wonder what they would do if someone came up and told you – nothing you know is real!  Eighth Day brings to light all the moral dilemmas of playing God, greed and lusting for power.

James Romick, narrator, is extremely talented.  He never lets the excitement get away – he builds it with his voice and controls the suspense masterfully.  His words are clear and express the perfect amount of emotion.  I enjoyed hearing him read this book.  He owned this book!

This is an interesting book and is one that will have you thinking about everything long after the last word is read.  The only downside to this book is the fact that it ends.  I look forward to hearing more by Joseph John and James Romick!

There were no issues with the production or the quality of this audio book.

Intriguing.

This was a truly intriguing and captivating read.

Shawn Jaffe is an average bloke, or so he thinks anyway! He is in a cafe one morning when someone walks up to him and says “Nothing you know is real. Your name isn't Shawn Jaffe, you're not an investment broker, and you're not from Ohio." Shawn doesn't know what to think and makes to go after him, but the man is murdered in front of him. Shawn is shocked and appalled. Was what he said true? Why is there a niggling doubt in his mind that the man may be right? When Detective Harrison is called upon to solve the murder, Shawn thinks he may have an ally but before they can investigate fully, something happens that will change Shawns perception of life fully!!

This book was like being on a rollercoaster as there are twists and turns and you never know which way the book will turn next! You are on the edge of your seat the whole way through and left gasping when the next turn does come. I had no idea what the author was going to do next, nor where the book was ultimately going!! It's a book full of suspense, surprises and thrills. I absolutely devoured it.

Shawn is an interesting character. He struggles to find out whats real and what's being forced on him. He lives a life but which is his true one?? I found myself becoming invested in his journey and anticipating what would happen him!

In all this was a unique and addicting read. I has such a tough time taking out the ear buds because I didn't want to miss what was happening. It's a fast paced, exciting and gripping read and I so hope we see more of this world.

I had no issues with James Romick's narration. He read the book well and portrayed the tenseness fine. He knows how to read a suspenseful read and how to keep the reader entertained.

I received this via Audiobook Boom. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.

Figurative bludgeoning

Jesus, this book was interminable. There were so many similes in this book that it was like an avalanche. The author attempted to drown me in them like a farmer drowning a sack of kittens. The book really wanted to be classy noir and fell flat like someone with their ankles tied together. The female characters are as flat as paper and as predictable as the tides. I spent my time rolling my eyes as hard as bowling balls on League Night. This was torture comparable to Guantanamo.

I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion. Obviously, all of the opinions above are my own.

Fast paced and interesting plot

Where does The Eighth Day rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's one of the shorter books I've listened to but the plot moves along well and there is a sense of closure that isn't too abrupt.

What did you like best about this story?

Lots of action and very little down-time. Plot moved forwards pretty fast and I liked how the storylines intertwined.

Which scene was your favorite?

Final action scene.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It kept me engaged, though sometimes I found the use of metaphors a little heavy.

Entertaining

Shawn Jaffe had just talked to the man staring with dead eyes at the ceiling with the bullet hole in his chest. He had said, “Nothing you know is real” (p2), which would have been easy to ignore if not for his sudden murder.

[SLIGHT SPOILERS] The events in the café set in motion a series of intriguing and frustrating attempts by Jaffe and Detective Harrington to figure out what was going on. Bodies disappear. Attempts are made on their lives. Lives are digitally erased. And then an unthinkable murder / suicide takes place and it all unravels even more. [END SPOILERS]

Part detective and part science fiction, John’s novel is the written equivalent of a Bruckheimer popcorn summer movie. It’s fast, moves faster, and includes lots of “on screen” violence. John does an excellent job keeping the reader guessing and even when we understand we are still engaged in the resolution – one that is highly satisfying in terms of pure aggression and excitement.

It is surprising to find a novel by a first time author that has the polish this one does. It’s slick and easy to read, deftly builds a world 25 years in the future, including future past events without being heavy handed about them. Some things may not fit exactly (will we still carry physical mobile phones in 25 years? Probably not) but it flows easily. There isn’t much work to imagine this world of the future, which allows the reader to enjoy the show without getting bogged down.

This is a very strong first novel. Science Fiction and action fans of summer blockbusters will definitely enjoy it.

Entertaining, tight, piece of sci-fi noir.

Any additional comments?
Not much to say about this simile laden piece of 'sci-fi noir' other than it is as much sci-fi as Frankenstein. That is to say sci-fi is an accessory, however, this does not detract from its effectiveness as an entertainment vehicle. Action packed from the very start, it keeps you engaged from the first paragraph. The narrative gets a little groan inducing at times "...faber beans and chianti" (please...), and the Mickey Spillane type style is at times hard to bear, but nevertheless, the author, John Joseph, does a great job of keeping his reader's attention and manages to provide a satisfying ending (although feels like the beginning of a series). The Audio Book version is read by James Romick who reminded me of the narrator of the old "untouchables" TV Series, this may have had a hand in his selection to read the material as it complements the material well and does the work justice. All in all, the book was entertaining and a great way to kill a few hours.
