Publisher's Summary

To the Jockey Club, the racing world would be a better place without Julius Apollo Filmer. An expert in corruption with a devastating line in witness intimidation, and proving to be a slippery character to put behind bars. Baffled, they call in undercover security agent Tor Kelsey to keep an unflinching eye on Filmer and his associates. A mission that takes him from the finest of English racecourses to the wild Canadian interior, on a luxury transcontinental train journey to end them all. On board, a troupe of actors are playing out a murder mystery to amuse their wealthy passengers. Ideal cover for a secret investigator with secrets of his own. And ideal cover, as it turns out, for an ice cool blackmailer with murder on his mind.

    "Dick Does It Again"

I will count this as one of my favourite Dick
Francis books. It has everything you expect from him; humour, crime, a hint of romance, a history on rail travel, and all done in an extremely entertaining way. His research is extensive, so I trust everything he writes in relation to the racing industry in Canada, the travel industry, and Canadian Rail. Bravo Mr. Francis.

"Easy listen that pulls you in."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The narrator was easy to listen to and added just enough vocal changes to create charater differentiation and interest. I've read Dick Francis before and once again he showed he was the master of this particular genre. Fastpaced and good twists and turns that keep you guessing and wanting to find out how things end. Worth a listen particularly on those long plane flights.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Edge?

Hard to pick one. That's a Dick Francis skill. He takes you on a roller coaster ride from one crisis to the next.

Which character – as performed by Tony Britton – was your favorite?

    Main character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Train track to horse track the race to save lives is on.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

    "Another stunner from Francis"

Dick Francis rarely disappoints me. This is one of my favourites among his novels. As usual, his central character is a man of decency and integrity, and immensely likeable; I particularly enjoyed this one's relationships with his work colleagues and others, and the mature and balanced way in which he deals with his wealth, not allowing it to interfere with his life, which he wants to count for something. He is tenacious in the face of danger, and it is gratfying to see the villain progressing unknowingly towards his defeat.

The Canadian backdrop is a delight. Dick Francis has an obvious love for the country and people, making this a heart-warming novel.

    Enjoyable in the extreme!

    "Give this one a miss...."

Oh dear, having read many Dick Francis books since I was a teenager, I decided to join Audible which I have been enjoying for almost a year, all my credits going on Dick Francis novels read by Tony Britton. I have thoroughly enjoy them all. But there is one exception; 'The Edge'. It is so dreary & I could not recommend it to anyone ! There is none of the usual excitement and the plot was simply not up to the normal standard of Mr Francis.
Don't waste a credit on this one !

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes and No. I aiways liked Dick Francis but not too many horses or actual racing in this..

What did you like best about this story?

I'll be going on a similar trip and was interested in the journey.

Have you listened to any of Tony Britton’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I thought his voice was too old for the character I.imagined. I had not listened to him before.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

"O three thousand miles over Canada"

I love Dick Francis books but The Edge was special - I worked for Air Canada in London for 25 years in which time visited lots of the places mentioned right from the East coast to the West coast - I am now retired and don't travel as much but this book took me back on a very happy journey right from Toronto to Vancouver - I with my family travelled on the train from Calgary where we stayed at the Chateau lake Louise - we then went over the Rockies in the glass topped carriage To Vancouver - however as on special discounted tickets (airline discounted ) we had to sit in seats no luxury sleepers for us - also travelled on the 15.00 LHR TO YVR many times - I felt that I also was on that train again and in Canada - thank you.

    "Good story but terrible recording"
What did you like best about The Edge? What did you like least?

The story is engaging and moves at a good pace mostly, with some great descriptions of the train journey across Canada

    Any additional comments?

Tony Britton does a fine job with all the different voices and accents, unfortunately it is often ruined by the recording quality which varies wildly and at times is barely audible (no pun intended). It's as if he recorded each chapter in a totally different studio with totally different equipment. Bizarre.

I always enjoy a good Dick Francis, and this is good Dick Francis! It is set mostly in Canada on a 'special' version of the trans Canada train. The hero is good, the villain is bad, and the story keeps you listening. Oh and its all about horses and horse racing. What more can you ask from a light read.

    "A must"

The story is typical Dick Francis; action all the way. A must if you intend travelling across Canada by rail. The descriptions of the VIA Rail 'Canadian' and the stops along the route, are remarkably accurate. This is the story which gave me the ambition to take the trans-Canada trip which I realised for our 40th wedding anniversary in 2010.
