Publisher's summary

Every man has his dark side...Spero Lucas confronts his own in the most explosive thriller yet from one of America's best-loved crime writers.

The job seems simple enough: retrieve the valuable painting - "The Double" - Grace Kinkaid's ex-boyfriend stole from her. It's the sort of thing Spero Lucas specializes in: finding what's missing, and doing it quietly. But Grace wants more. She wants Lucas to find the man who humiliated her--a violent career criminal with a small gang of brutal thugs at his beck and call.

Lucas is a man who knows how to get what he wants, whether it's a thief on the run - or a married woman. In the midst of a steamy, passionate love affair that he knows can't last, in pursuit of a dangerous man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, Lucas is forced to decide what kind of man he is - and how far he'll go to get what he wants.

Great follow up to the first book!

Great pace, well performed, and engaging characters. I enjoyed the first book, and this was better.

Another well written, morally compromised private eye DC story by George Pelecanos

Pelecanos is a gifted writer, particularly with dialogue. Well developed characters, including an almost anti-hero protagonist crime solver in “The Enforcer” mode. This was my 2nd Pelecanos book, and I recommend it, despite the over the top sex scenes. A breathless quality to Dion Graham’s voice annoyed me at first, but this was a first-rate narration.

Enjoyable, light reading

This book does not display much sophistication in the plot or depth in the characters nor a particularly engaging atmosphere. But, all in all, it is an enjoyable reading, light and refreshing like a homemade lemonade in a hot summer day.

Easy listen.

Second book in this series. My only disappointment... I can't find book number three. I certainly hope there is one on the way.

Another good Spero tale

A good story about the adventures of Spero Lucas in and about the neighborhoods of Washington DC.

Spero has a lot of balls in the air and he works full time to keep them in the air. He’s very busy solving and avenging multiple crimes, ranging from ordinary street crimes to complex scams and robberies.

I liked this book but be aware that it has numerous sex scenes with graphic descriptions. They add nothing to the book and should have been left on the cutting room floor.

Inconsistent characters

Terrible story. No insight no rational behavior no fun. Spero is stupid. Don’t waste a credit.

Audio porn

I felt like a pervert listening to the unnecessary sex that added nothing to the storyline
