Publisher's summary

"Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style." So says mining magnate Sir James Manson, a shadowy titan of London's financial district, who is scheming a coup d'état in the small West African dictatorship of Zangaro, where a secret source of platinum lies waiting to be exploited.

The man selected to plan and carry out the sack of Zangaro is Cat Shannon, a 33-year-old Anglo-Irishman from Nigeria. If the goal is clear, the means are not, for there are no up-to-date manuals on overthrowing governments by force. By the time he has set forth this sinister venture in all its ramifications, Frederick Forsyth has fashioned that manual and given us a classic of terror and enthrallment.

Details

Some may complain about the details of preparation for the project undertaken in this story and it was full of detail, it is the details that make or break such a project. In order to make sure I’ve missed nothing of those details I’ve begun hearing it again. Frederick Forsyth is a newly discovered treasure to me. Moves along quite rapidly. With a nice little twist of irony here and there. The reader chosen for this story and is very appropriate to the work. The added element of the voice rendering the text is of paramount importance to the success of the production. Well done!

I want to be a gun smuggler more than ever!

Intriguing and very entertaining look at how things are done in the international Mercenary circuit.

A masterpiece

Saw a lot of complaints in the comments about this book being overly detailed. I loved every second of this amazing novel and appreciated how hard the writing worked to add so much information and context to every single character and situation. A perfect book. After the last word of the book I audibly said “oh wow “. Wonderful surprise ending I didn’t see coming and the buildup reminded me of Catcher in the Rye - how while reading you switched from “is this book terrible or an absolute masterpiece” and then the big payoff at the end. I read the day of the jackal and this book is as free in the catalog but I’m using credits to read everything by this author. Five stars isn’t enough for how superb this book is. Not a book you can follow while you’re cooking or something. It requires your complete attention which I believe the author does on purpose

Engrossing plot

Excellent writing and technically, mostly, correct. I’ve read the book many times, but listening to was simply the best. Oh, loading a schmeisser with thumb and forefinger is nearly impossible. The spring in the magazine is incredibly stiff.

Poor Recording?

This is a wonderful story and very well read, but don't listen with headphones...it sounds like it was recorded over an old tape and you often hear sub vocal noises that makes you feel like you're experiencing a psychotic break.

classic book by a great author

I read the book soon after it's release in the 70s. It is one of FF's best books. Released in 74, it is now something of a period piece, with the characters jet setting around Europe, sending telexes and waiting for contact in pre-arranged hotels. definitely recommended for lovers of the intricate tales of international intrigue, written by someone who had actually experienced it as a running journalists.

5 stars with Asterisk

The story is great. The performance was good. The recording quality was terrible. The background sounds make it seem like it was recorded in someone’s bedroom

A little hard to follow

But a great story and and it has a wonderful ending. It's more fun when the good guys win
