Publisher's summary

A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star - a pentagram, the devil’s star.

Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work.

A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands, and the five-pointed devil’s star is key to solving the riddle.

Wow! Gripping Harry Hole mystery.

This was the best of the series so far. I've gotten more used to the complexity of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole mysteries. I think knowing to expect the stories within stories has made it easier to track details and make the connections that the author so skillfully weaves into this series.
Gripping, surprising, and philosophical. Can't wait to listen to the next one. I liked this narrator too.

Another fantastic book by Jo Nesbo

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I can't wait to get my hands on the next Jo Nesbo book or audio book. Robin Sachs is the best narrator in the series. Never a dull moment reading or listening to this author. My favorite so far was the Snow Man and The Leopard.

Jo Nesbø scores again.

I liked the story and the descriptions of the characters. Detective inspector Harry Hole is a good guy, and it’s nice to see him be appreciated by his “superiors.”

A Solid Installment in the Series

Another good installment in the series. Better than Nemesis, about the same as The Redbreast. The plot was improved and the ending might be the best yet. Glad to have Sachs back, the reading was great.

The Devil's Star

My third Jo Nesbo/Harry Hole novel, and so far I think it's the best. I am excited to read the next few books. The story is complex, there are several themes, the obvious one of the murders and who done it, then the politics of the police and what's going on there, then lastly Harry's life and relationships with those living and dead. These themes are woven together into what was a wonderful read. I do think this book could be read independently of the other/earlier books, but it did help to have read the Redbreast and even Nemisis (though that one was hard to listen to).

Harry's revenge is coming...but not without pain

Would you listen to The Devil's Star again? Why?

Probably not. But I'm not usually a guy who listens to books more than once.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Devil's Star?

Please! OK.. spoiler alert. (pause) ... The inevitable meeting between Harry and Voller in the hallway.. and then the lift.. was classic.

What about Robin Sachs’s performance did you like?

Everything! Sachs is one of my favorites. I'm a reader snob, and I mourn the fact that he isn't reading ALL the Hole books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me cringe in a few spots. But all the Nesbo books do.

Any additional comments?

Overall, I liked this one the best so far.. starting from the beginning of the series. Partially because Sachs is the reader, but also because it draws some loose ends together and sets the stage for the next phase of Harry's existence. I didn't say "life," because he still seems to be tackling it one day at a time!

Narrator is perfect

Robin Sachs is great narrator for Harry Hole books. Have listened to first 4 books & he does the beat job of any narrator. The overall story is a bit more gruesome than others so far.
