Publisher's summary

A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star - a pentagram, the devil’s star.

Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work.

A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands, and the five-pointed devil’s star is key to solving the riddle.

Another great thriller by Jo Nesbo

What did you like best about this story?

Nesbo's mysteries are always intricate and unpredictable. There were a variety of interesting characters in this one.

What three words best describe Robin Sachs’s voice?

Raspy, old

Any additional comments?

In my opinion, the narrator should be a younger-sounding guy who can do different voices. It's hard to tell who's talking.

This is my favorite one so far

Loved it. The narration was great. Tom was more menacing and Harry seemed more intense. it was as if the deep voice gave the characters an extra dimension. The story was great also with some unexpected twists and turns.

Another Great Harry Hole!

I am hooked on Harry Hole books. I can’t wait for the next in the series. I just discovered this author in 2023 and I love his plots and characters. Plus I have never read about Oslo or knew anything about the culture before and it is great learning about how exceptional their ways are.

My 2nd Nesbo

This is a great book, intense, a page turner. Nesbo is a very imaginative author, he tells a good, tight story with good human insight. I can't wait for my next one.

Police/Crime Thriller

A serious 'Crime Thriller' written by Norway's Jo Nesbo.

I have read three books in the Harry Hole series and this was my favorite. It had a well-considered plot, good dialogue, positive character development, and the writing was expertly handled.I enjoyed the character study of Harry Hole (the hero/anti-hero). He is funny in a pathetic, yet lovable way.

There were multiple minor plot lines that intersected during the chase for an elusive serial killer; I felt this added interest to the story, and thickened the plot. I do not always enjoy multi-tiered stories, but in this case it was a welcome addition.

The descriptions of the crimes were mild given that the subject matter involves a serial killer and multiple victims, but would nevertheless give it a strong R-rating for violence and graphic sexual content.

*Recommended for fans of the genre only.

impressive

Would you consider the audio edition of The Devil's Star to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version

What did you like best about this story?

the small moments, pauses and reflections bring right to the time and place in these stories. These books make me want to write

Which character – as performed by Robin Sachs – was your favorite?

Harry Hole

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Its pretty disturbing overall. I do think that Nebso's description of Harry's addiction is well done and in this case it make Harry Real!

Any additional comments?

Better that Stieg Larson. Deserves more recognition.

Love the bad guy

Am I the only one who will miss Tom? Harry steps up his game in uncovering Tom in this installment. While I felt the murder mystery was a bit theatrical (pun intended) the action was gripping and it's another great read.

Read on

I first tripped across The Snowman and really loved the story, so natural progression was to read this one. I think there were some parts that dragged on a bit more than The Snowman, but the book kept my interest to the very end. Very much worth the read for me.
