Publisher's summary

Deep in the Rocky Mountains, a gruesome discovery - hundreds of mummified bodies - stirs international attention and fervent controversy. Despite doubts to the bodies' origins, the local Native American Heritage Commission lays claim to the prehistoric remains, along with the strange artifacts found in the same cavern: gold plates inscribed with an unfathomable script.

During a riot at the dig site, an anthropologist dies horribly. All evidence points to a radical group of Native Americans, including one agitator who escapes with a vital clue to the murder and calls on the one person who might help - her uncle, Painter Crowe, director of Sigma Force. To protect his niece and uncover the truth, Painter will ignite a war across the nation's most powerful intelligence agencies. Yet, an even greater threat looms as events in the Rocky Mountains have set in motion a geological meltdown that threatens the entire western half of the U.S.

From the volcanic peaks of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from the gold vaults of Fort Knox to the bubbling geysers of Yellowstone, Painter Crowe joins forces with commander Gray Pierce to penetrate the shadowy heart of a dark cabal, one that has been manipulating American history since the founding of the 13 colonies. But can he discover the truth before it destroys all he holds dear?

A bit disappointing

Pretty sure I’ve read the novels that preceded this one and enjoyed them immensely. I didn’t get along well with the narrator from the start. He’s not a bad narrator just maybe not perfect for this novel. I had a hard time following the plot and the characters, so it was really hard to follow the story. Too much going on. I don’t remember having this issue with the previous novels. Been a while since I’ve listened to them. So not a bad book, and not a bad narration, just not a five star.

Sigma to the rescue - again!

I am a huge fan of Rollins' Sigma books (and his stand alones) and have been waiting for this book. I spent two days listening to it and just finished it a bit ago.

No need to go over the plot - the description says what it is. What I enjoy so much about Rollins' books is what I learn. I'm going to have to listen to the book again with a browser open to check on the facts he presents. As always his characters are full of life and are like old friends that I get to share an adventure with every year or so.

There are so many twists and turns in this book that I sometimes think we need a road map to keep track of what group is up to what. But this just keeps me listening and if I were reading the book I'd label it a "page turner."

The only problem with listening to Devil Coloiny is that - now I have to wait who knows how long for another new adventure with Sigma. Guess I'll just have to re-listen to them and hope that the next book isn't too far off - especially after the last few lines of the story.

Rollins makes me laugh, gasp, and cry. I love his work and can't wait to see what trip he'll take his fans on next.

Way too much History.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. Became monotonous at times. The historical details went on and on. Good story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Don't know

Which character – as performed by Peter Jay Fernandez – was your favorite?

Gray

Another great story!

I don't know how Rollins manages to take completely unrelated topics and weave them into realistic and relevant plots. The characters are engaging and believable. Don't know why this book did not have the "What's real and what's not" addendum at the end, hence the four stars for story. Maybe that was just this particular Audible production, but I really missed it. Great narrator!

Rollins veterans can predict the ending

This book kept me listening to the end, even if it isn't as good as the other Sigma Force novels. The early American history woven into ancient history, along with some comic book science. I did know the outline of the ending about half way through the novel, however. His books are generally good. This one is a little below par, but still listenable.

Intersting Premise

If you could sum up The Devil Colony in three words, what would they be?

Interesting, unusual, exciting

What other book might you compare The Devil Colony to and why?

Most of James Rollins books have the same feel

What about Peter Jay Fernandez’s performance did you like?

It was good. He was clear and emphased the scene as needed

Any additional comments?

I always enjoy the tales that Rollins weaves they keep my attention and interest until the end. I love his reoccuring characters and miss them when the book ends but I also enjoy the new people he brings to the table with each adventure.

NARRATOR NEEDS TO LEARN TO ENUNCIATE EVERY WORD

Would you listen to The Devil Colony again? Why?

NO! Jay Fernandez is why. He is the king of dropped word endings. Consistantly throughout the book MANY TIMES PER PAGE - he drops s's t's ed's. He drops the end of the word. I remember now returning multiple books read by him in the past. I decided to deal with it this time. BUT NEVER AGAIN!

Would you recommend The Devil Colony to your friends? Why or why not?

It's a decently entertaining book but the narrator is horrible

What didn’t you like about Peter Jay Fernandez’s performance?

He drops the end off more words than is acceptable
