Publisher's summary

John Rain is back. And “the most charismatic assassin since James Bond” (San Francisco Chronicle) is up against his most formidable enemy yet: the nexus of political, military, media, and corporate factions known only as the Oligarchy.

When legendary black ops veteran Colonel Scott “Hort” Horton tracks Rain down in Tokyo, Rain can’t resist the offer: a multi-million dollar payday for the “natural causes” demise of three ultra-high-profile targets who are dangerously close to launching a coup in America. But the opposition on this job is going to be too much for even Rain to pull it off alone. He’ll need a detachment of other deniable irregulars: his partner, the former Marine sniper, Dox. Ben Treven, a covert operator with ambivalent motives and conflicted loyalties. And Larison, a man with a hair trigger and a secret he’ll kill to protect.

From the shadowy backstreets of Tokyo and Vienna, to the deceptive glitz and glamour of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and finally to a Washington, D.C. in a permanent state of war, these four lone wolf killers will have to survive presidential hit teams, secret CIA prisons, and a national security state as obsessed with guarding its own secrets as it is with invading the privacy of the populace. But first, they’ll have to survive each other.

The Detachment is what fans of Eisler, “one of the most talented and literary writers in the thriller genre” (Chicago Sun-Times), have been waiting for: the worlds of the award-winning Rain series, and of the best-selling Fault Line and Inside Out, colliding in one explosive thriller as real as today’s headlines and as frightening as tomorrow’s.

May be the best one yet!

I really enjoyed this book as well. May even be the best one so far. You did an excellent job of mixing the different characters together and the story itself was very followable. Great work as always!

most original

I've always loved the Rain books, and especially how John Rain's character speaks from first person. love to see his character managing more than just himself and a sidekick. Bringing in other characters from different othe r beloved Eisler books makes the telling of this story with an already believable plot even richer. Hate to hear it end!

A bit slow

What about Barry Eisler’s performance did you like?

Since the main character (the one telling the story) is supposed to be Asian I was surprised the author (definitely not Asian) chose to read it - especially without an accent.

Any additional comments?

I liked the story but it was a bit slow and predictable.

Once again

Would you consider the audio edition of The Detachment to be better than the print version?

why ask something like that?

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was a good story. painted a decent picture in my mind. dude was able to create enough tension for me to rewind a few times.

Which scene was your favorite?

when the gun was tossed. That was a moment. The choices we make.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Life is full of hard choices, some cost more than others.

You Know, Dox Said...

The Detachment is the first book I read in the John Rain universe. After reading it, I bought and read every other book. By far, this is one of my favorites? Why? Because it brings Dox, John, Treven and Larison together and forces them to work together to solve a great big problem. That's the story. The plot is based on previous events from other stories. For a moment, I seriously wondered if I had enough brain matter to understand what was going on. Eventually I caught up, and totally enjoyed it.

Character-wise, I just luvvved Dox. Maybe it's 'cause I'm a southerner, but whatever! Dox sounds like home and if I could pick a sniper to become friends with, he'd be my first choice. Barry Eisler was a great narrator. I liked him. He knew what his characters sounded like when he wrote the story and I can hear Larison's creepy cool demeanor and Dox's slow and easy personality. That is until it's time to get serious.

My favorite scene in the entire book, read by Eisler, is the headline. When Dox says, "You Know...", I died laughing! That's all I'm going to say about that.

Found a new fave

I came across this authors name reading reviews of another book I had just finished. A lot of the readers compared these books to Reacher books, which are faves of mine, so I decided to give it a try. Can't wait to devour the rest! It was fantastic!

Great

Quite enjoyed this listen. The team that bands together in this book is excellent. I cannot imagine living like these folks do. They all bring different skill sets to the team and it just works. Well done, again.
