Publisher's summary

After an adventurous season spent excavating at Dahshoor, and narrowly averting the clutches of the Master Criminal, Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson and her spouse prepare for a quiet summer in England. The social and domestic routine, though interrupted by the precocious escapades of their only child, Ramses, hardly seems much of a challenge for the indomitable Emersons.

But, rest assured, dear reader...domesticity does not prevail. When a night watchman mysteriously dies in front of the mummy Lady Henutmehit in the Egyptian room of the British Museum, Amelia is on the scene with her trusty parasol, ready to do battle with the malignant mummy.

Despite the appearance of an ancient sem priest and cryptic notes in hieroglyphics, Amelia surmises that a less-ancient villain is at work, a villain with evil plans for select members of the British archeological community, including her beloved Emerson. Is the villain plotting Emerson's demise, or something even more sinister?

Laugh Out Loud Who-Done-It

Barbara Rosenblat becomes all of the characters in Elizabeth Peter’s book. The dramatic sighs, officious pronunciations, voice variations all work together to weave reality into a delightful tale. And Ramses - if you don’t laugh out loud at his heroics you must be wrapped in muslin and live in an mummy case. A whopping good adventure all around.

Dishonesty, snarkiness, underhanded behavior!

Once again Elizabeth Peters presents us with a mystery of intrigue in which Amelia and Emerson are immersed. This time they are not showing us the wonders of Egypt but the darker side of London. On an aside we meet her brother's children and find them to be much like her brother devious and harmful. The two children have been told to ingratiate themselves to Amelia, placing Ramses into intolerable situations, which at times put him into danger. What comes from this situation finally opens the eyes of Amelia to her son's true goodness. She finally starts to appreciate him! About time too, for Ramses appears to worship his parents.
I'm again going through this set of books. This time listening to its entirety. The reader Barbara Rosenblat is fantastic. Audible offers this series read by another. I am spoiled and so am extremely careful now in purchasing the correct reader. Barbara is the true epitome of Amelia. I listen with tongue in cheek to what I feel is the soul of Amelia Peabody. ( a bit of a know it all hidden in a true English woman of her time, a busy body who would be amazed to know ths is how she is seen.)
I'm having a Great time reliving this series again!

I ❤️ Amelia

Best series I’ve ever “read”. Thoroughly enjoyable story; sufficiently complex plot, enticing characters and inspiring locations.
As I listen to the books in order, I note each story is fresh and adequately different from all other stories
The performance is SPECTACULAR

Amelia Peabody and her family in high spirits!

What did you love best about The Deeds of the Disturber?

The story takes place in Great Britain and features highborn families, an archeologist and his wonderful family and not so wonderful relatives in a funny and highly entertaining chase for a vicious murderer disguised as an ancient Egyptian priest.
Ramses Emerson is emerging as a skilled investigator, Amelia herself is caught in the throngs of jealousy and Emerson is his usual irascible self.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Deeds of the Disturber?

Ramses disguises himself as a girl and finds that girls are more inhibiting than playing a street urchin.

Have you listened to any of Barbara Rosenblat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Her performances always are a rare delight. Her work on the British accent could be improved at times.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Amelia Peabody Emerson succumbs to jealousy. Everyone can relate to this!

Any additional comments?

A must for any Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Rosenblat enthusiast!

Really, Peabody!

The narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, is FANTASTIC!!! I choose books based on her narratives. Amelia Peabody, the main character in this series, has a bit too much sexual activity for my taste. I'm not a prude,... but, every afternoon before dinner and after dinner,...really! Is it necessary to mention it time and time again? And reference to all the bulging muscles of her husband chest and arms and all the shirts he ruins because of it. Buy bigger shirts! All of the other characters are great. I wish I could see what becomes of her brilliantly odd son, Ramses. But, it is getting to the point, in my opinion, that it is ruining great mystery series. I usually buy and listen to an entire series of books. However, I'm done with Amelia Peabody at book 5.

Intrigue finds the Emersons in England!

Although I personally did not enjoy this storyline as much as I have the others in this series, it wins five out of five stars because it is still a superlative work.

Egypt is not the only place that intrigue finds the Emersons! The team of Emerson and Peabody are summering, as they always do, in England and yet there is no respite for them from the crime and murder they always seem to attract in Egypt.

Bound to London because of a book deadline, Emerson tries to persuade Peabody that she should summer in a more salubrious setting with Walter and Evelyn. Amelia will not have it. A death has occurred at the British Museum; but was it of natural causes as the police seem to believe or of a more diabolical origin?

A great returning cast of characters and some new ones as well as the change of venue make this book a nice interlude for fans of Peters and Rosenblat.
